Indeed, Happy Armistice Day (we call it Veterans Day here in the US, but same idea of honoring those who have served).

Interestingly, in spite of having participated in significant military operations in WWI, it's not celebrated at all in SA, and nor is it to do with foreign wars by colonial powers either, since it wasn't celebrated prior to the regime change anyway.

(Hmmm, it might have something to do with the fact that a sizeable part of the Afrikaaner population at the time was opposed to participating, and they later became the dominant political force, so maybe were snubbing the British thereby. But that's just speculation.)

Also, nice to see you round JemCheeta. ;)

In America 🇺🇸.

Veterans Dayoriginated as “Armistice Day" on November, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.
