What fantasy/science fiction book are you reading RIGHT NOW?

A place for anything *not* Donaldson.

Strange book called The Fall of Lucifer by Wendy Alec.

A novelisation of the Genesis story, with God as almost the ultimate CEO of a scientific business park, in which the Milky Way, Earth and mankind are designed and developed. Lucifer is pissed at the seeming disloyalty of God in designing man after his own image (and giving him the power of procreation, a faculty denied to the angelic orders) and - you get it - goes on a rampage.

Cue the war in heaven, the fall and all the rest of it. I'm at the point where it's been discovered that Noah's bloodline is the only one that hasn't been contaminated by the randy Watchers and thus having no trace of the nephilim genome, is worthy of being preserved. Haven't got there yet, but my guess is that it's about to get stormy outside!

(Also, finished Mission Earth (the last 3 books definitely the best) and Pygmy...not sure what to read next. Need to get the new Path To Ascendancy book...)

(Been doing much more gaming than reading.)

By the time he gets that last book out I will have to re-read just to remember the plot and characters.

Sheesh, I've read the first 2 at least twice, maybe 3 times. Bastard. :D

In other news, I've started re-reading Bakker's "Prince of Nothing" series...I don't know why I do this to myself...as brilliant as the books start out, I'm inevitably disappointed by the time I get to the end.

Anyway, about half-way through "The Darkness That Comes Before."

Just a follow up.

I think I said somewhere above that I'd started Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series.

The first book, Wizards First Rule, turned out okay, and on this basis I decided to keep going for a while. I'm now (what?) four, maybe five in, and I've really enjoyed them. I don't read them back to back (hence my forgetting how many I have actually read), but with a book or two in between, they're working out just fine.

Sure - it isn't Tolkien or Donaldson......but it's a perfectly entertaining hour or two's reading at the end of the day. And at the end of the day, that is all I require.

Well, since my last post, I've finished Bk 3, The Thousandfold Thought, as well as The Judging Eye and The White-Luck Warrior, the first and second books of the 2nd series. Busy on The Great Ordeal now.

(The eternal dilemma I face is that if I game, I can't read, and if I read, I can't game. :D )

I suggest reading them in chronological order (not the order I read them in), so Best Served Cold first, and then Red Country.

And yes, great characterisation. Logan is, ultimately, a tragic figure. Definitely one of my favourite.

Anyway, I finished the "Broken Empire" books, then went on to William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, (I would love to see a modern sequel) and now reading Zero History by the same author.

I just finished Best Served Cold and Hero's. I will be starting Red Country next. So far its been a really good read albeit some bloody battles. And of course just when you think they are on the path of peace, instead its just the next step to a new war. Seem Bayaz continues to pull the strings behind the scenes.

I think what always strikes me is how Logan becomes a more and more tragic figure as the story progresses.

I finished The Unholy Consult and not sure what to read next...gaming again for now instead. :D

Also...damn it...To the Bakker thread...

Well, read Gemmel's "White Wolf" which means I had to read "The Swords of Night and Day" next. Which is what I'm busy on now.

Thing with Gemmel is once you start you kinda get sucked in...

Finished The Swords of Night and Day.

Think I may re-read The Amtrak Wars, by Patrick Tilley, starting with bk1 Cloud Warrior.

Unfortunately he died a fwew years back, so I guess we'll never see a sequel / conclusion. :(

Well, carried on with First Family and Iron Master, now busy on Book 4, Blood River. Still good books...sci-fi might not be right, but certainly post-apocalyptic...

I just finished Adrian Tchaikovsky's City of Last Chances and started on the follow-up House of Open Wounds. He's just so good.

Finished the Amtrak Wars, with book 5 Death-Bringer and the final book 6, Earth Thunder.

I forgot just how hard the end hits...it's a crying shame he never wrote a second series...we get all of the build-up and the most open ending ever. :(

Dunno what to read next...thinking about it...maybe back to Gemmel...undecided...

I think I may take a re-read of one of my favourite old fantasy series, Weiss & Hickmann's "Rose of the Prophet." Starting with Vol 1, The Will of the Wanderer.

(I've always loved the (heavily DND inspired) religious system in it.)

I re-read the original Weiss and Hickman Dragonlance books (well - about one and a half of them) a year or so ago Av.

I found my tastes had moved. I really enjoyed the books back in the eighties, but now they just seemed a bit (I don't know) cliched or something?

Don't recall the series you are referring however and I do like the authors, so maybe I'll try to get a copy from the library or somewhere. (Having said that, ebay prices are going up pretty considerably; books I'd get for 1.99 are now 3.50 minimum and more likely 4 or 5 quid. Inflation at four percent my arse! ;) )

I've just completed Gardens of the Moon, first in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and am just a few pages into book 2, Deadhouse Gates.

Really liked book 1, and am excited to find a series (that I know has been popular amongst you fellah's) that is starting off so promisingly.

Here's hoping that the standard is maintained!
