@peter, I personally couldn’t get into Malazan, but I know there was an active Malazan sub-forum down in The Library or somewhere here on the Watch. If you haven’t already, do post there. I think the regulars will be happy to see fresh blood, err, new readers to the series.

Oh, it is maintained! Many people say GotM was very difficult for them, citing various issues. I'm one of the fairly rare ones who loved it right off the bat. Even so, it is the least of them, imo. Nothing but better from here on! You're currently reading an incredible one.

Maintained? Pfft, things only get better from GoTM. And the only time I don't think DHG is the best book of the series is when I'm reading the next one, Memories of Ice.

You'd better hie yourself to the Malazan forum and let us vicariously re-live the pleasure of discovering them for the first time. :D

(Also, re Weiss & Hickmann, they're cliched now because they were some of the first DnD-style fantasy stories for the mass market. It's honestly a toss-up between RotP and the Darksword Trilogy for me...but Star of the Guardians gets an honourable mention for a sci-fi version, even if it is a bit star wars derivative...) They're all better than the Dragonlance books, much as I loved those too at the time.)

Indeed - away to the Malazan designated threads for me, with the (generally ;) ) high level endorsements ringing in my ears.

Yes Av, I loved Dragonlance at the time as well - gosh how I loved them! They were everything that fantasy sword and sorry was supposed to be about!

Well, busy on the final Rose of the Prophet book, The Prophet of Ahkran.

One thing that really stood out to me from this series was the inclusion of a clearly gay / bisexual main character, which considering these were written by a couple of Mormon's in the 80's was probably pretty ground-breaking.

And since I'm doing it, have moved on to Margaret Weiss' Star of the Guardians, book 1, The Lost King. Space opera but I can't help drawing parallels with Star Wars which it is clearly at least partially "inspired" by.

Ive been reading the Cradle series by Will Wight. I am currently on book 10 (Reaper) and there are two more out (Dreadgod and Waybound) in this series that I will read before starting anything new.

This series is nothing "high brow". I almost didn't pick it back up after reading the first book, but I got bored one day and noticed I had the second one downloaded so kept going, eventually I got interested in the story and characters so here I am reading book 10 and ready to start 11 and 12. These will not make my top 100 list for sure. But I would not consider the read a waste of time by any stretch.

It is time. I finished off book 11 of the Cradle. I do recommend the series but remember its just fun reading, nothing highbrow.

I found that I actually downloaded the first book and never started it. Going to start it this weekend.

Let's see...since my last post, I finished Dark Prince, then read the 4 Rigante books by Gemmel, Sword in the Storm, Midnight Falcon, Ravenheart and Stormrider, then the 3 Troy Books, Lord of the Silver Bow, Shield of Thunder and Fall of Kings.

Now...I don't know what to read next. :D

Oh well, @SoulBiter has inspired me...I'm joining his Malazan read. :D Starting with Night of Knives because that's how I like to do it. :D

@Fist and Faith, for the record, this is the 8th time I'm reading it according to this thread. :P
