Astutely articulated Condign. You are right imv.
I agree because I cant fault your observation .. but lol ... as much as it was a rape in fact ... it was as horrifying to TC as it was to the reader. He did not possess the requisite cognisance for the crime AT THE TIME.
TC may have indulged in fantasies where he was potent, was sexually capable .. but in HIS reality he lacked this capability.
We are introduced to a sexually frustrated angry human whos life, family and any prospect of intimacy had been robbed him.
Is Covenant redeemable in the #MeToo era?

I almost gave up on the whole series after reading the rape scene. I was a teenager at the time and thought in pretty black and white terms. How in the heck was I supposed to get behind a character like that? And when later, he says something like, "What do you do for an encore, Foul, rape children?" I wanted to shout back, "No, Tom, YOU do!!" Glad I stuck with it. Taught me there's the possibility of redemption for everyone.
Joy is in the ears that hear.

Anyone know where Wayfriend's quote link should point to? It seems to be broken?
Hence the inclusion of rape and possession - of taking away choices - in the story, and their association with evil. It even, indirectly, necessitates wild magic. (But I have written about that elsewhere https://kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/v ... light=epic.)
