Best-seller list

Post by Alynna Lis Eachann »

Not keeping a specific eye on the best-seller list, but I did notice that Runes was something like #85 on the amazon.com "top sellers" list. Pretty good, considering the mass-market mess that's taking top honors there. Harry Potter 5 was #83, I think.

What sci-fi am I reading right now? Well, Runes obviously. And sneaking in Harry Potter: OotP, too. Started on Mordant's Need, but so far... :-|

Make it two weeks. Just saw I could cancel and reorder Shadowmarch and save £1.80, but the release date has changed to Nov 4th.

I just finished my re-read of all six Covenant books, and by the end of this week (hopefully) I should be able to grab a copy of Runes. If I can't for any reason, Elric, Amber and several mythology books are waiting for me...

I've almost finished "100 years of solitude" by Marquez. Although its not strictly "fantasy/sci-fi", it has a lot of magical and supernatural elements to it. About a family and a town in the Carribbean (sp?), and their development from primitive natives to modern (Western) people. A tough read given that so many characters in it have similar names, but worthy of the 'classic' status it has attained.

My fiancee keeps nagging me to read the Death Gate Cyle by Weis and Hickman next ...

Mission Earth 10: The Doomed Planet

Death Gate cycle is not bad, chances are though that you'll only really enjoy it if you like their other works.

Im reading Mark Jeffrey's book, The Pocket and The Pendant. It is a terrific story, and I can't do it justice right this moment, but will finish it this week.
It is unexpectedly, wonderfully different.

Horizon Storms, by Kevin J. Anderson. Book 3 of The Saga of Seven Suns.

Dunno if anybody knows these, more Sci-Fi in the epic tradition. Don't know how many there will be, but it seems that more and more people are going for these huge series.

Is it Jordan rubbing off? Or was it started by Hubbard himself with his (groundbreaking?) dekology?

No, I think publishers are giving these epic stories more of a chance, because they are money makers. It's being turned into an industry, just like everything else.

Several people have reccomended this new Donaldson book to me, so I'm reading that right now.

This has been a pretty tough month for me and most unusually, I have read virtually nothing lately. I finished Runes of the Earth, and I started The Gunslinger by Stephen King, and greatly enjoyed both (of what I've read of the second one, anyway) but I can't seem to find much time, and when I do I've been too tired to concentrate.

One kid is on round two of a staph infection he developed last month, and the other one just got out of a cast, which he got from tripping and falling down the stairs and getting hurt. **sigh** And then there's work...

Real life can be a bite in the butt sometimes. :| Especially when it gets in the way of reading.
Love as thou wilt.

Funny, Gunslinger is next on my plate, too. I have 3 chapters left of Runes first, though.

Now re-reading The Legend of Deathwalker by David Gemmell. When I re-read one Gemmell book, I tend to binge on them.

I finished The Scar by China Mieville. Like Iron Council, it's a tough read (not like Dickens or Tolstoy, but more like GRRM), but more rewarding.

Currently, I'm reading Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors, which I've either picked up once before or just read the first couple of stories elsewhere (kind of disappointing when that happens in short collections).
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
