Re: why it was cut out

Post by I'm Murrin »

Berenford wrote:As I said a few posts above, this isn't quite right. Gilden-Fire is all about Korik's mission encountering wolves and urviles in Grimmerdhore on their way east. But in The Illearth War, Runnik says, when talking of his return to Grimmerdhore:
SRD (with added emphasis) wrote: But when we entered Grimmerdhore, we were beset by wolves and ur-viles, though we saw no sign of them when we passed eastward.
This suggests that SRD not only cut out the relating of the events of Gilden-Fire from The Illearth War, but cut out the happening of the events as well.
Runnik says that they were beset by wolves and Ur-Viles, in Grimmerdhore, but not when they passed eastward (from Grimmerdhore, ie after leaving the forest).

I disagree. This is the statement that lets us know that the events of Gilden-fire are outside the continuity of TIW. Runnik is saying that on their first trip through Grimmerdhore, they saw no sign of wolves and ur-viles, but encountered them on their way back to Revelstone.

Hmm. Perhaps. Does it make it more clear if he is actually talking about the return journey? In fact, did he even make the return journey through Grimmerdhore? I thought they took a different route back.

Yes, the context makes it clear that he is talking about the return journey:
SRD wrote:For a moment longer, Runnik hesitated. Then he said, "High Lord, I have come from the depths of Sarangrave Flat from the Defiles Course and the mission to Seareach. To me, and to Pren and Porib with me, Korik said, `Return to the High Lord. Tell her all -all the words of Warhaft Hoerkin, all the struggles of the Ranyhyn, all the attacks of the lurker. Tell her of the fall of Lord Shetra.' " Amatin moaned in her throat, and Mhoram stiffened. But Elena held Runnik with the intensity of her face. " `She will know how to hear this tale of Giants and Ravers. Tell her that the mission will not fail.'

" `Fist and faith,' we three responded. `We will not fail.'

"But for four days we strove with the Sarangrave, and Pren fell to the lurker that has awakened. Then we won our way to the west of the Flat, and there regained our Ranyhyn. With our best speed we rode toward Revelstone. But when we entered Grimmerdhore, we were beset by wolves and ur-viles, though we saw no sign of them when we passed eastward. Porib and his Ranyhyn fell so that I might escape, and I rode onward.

"Then on the west of Grimmerdhore, I met with scouts of the Warward, and learned that Corruption was marching, and that the High Lord had ridden toward Revelwood. So I turned aside from Revelstone and came in pursuit to find you here.

Hey, I liked the illustrations, too! Maybe they don't depict things in perfect detail, but I've yet to find cover art that does. I love the way Stephen Fabian drew the Ranyhyn, though his vision of Revelstone is not at all as I imagine it.

The edition I have is from 1981, by Underwood/Miller, out of San Francisco. Is this the Science Fiction Book Club edition? ...wait, it does say "book club edition," just not which club.

I recall SRD saying (I think it was during the GI) that he was embarrased that we were buying something that he had "put in the trash," to paraphrase.

"Now if you remember all great paintings have an element of tragedy to them. Uh, for instance if you remember from last week, the unicorn was stuck on the aircraft carrier and couldn't get off. That was very sad. " - Kids in the Hall

I didn't like the illustrations...

The Lords' staffs looked like curtain rods, and Lord Shetra was WAYYYY too good-looking, not like the "iron gray short hair" described in the book....

This is probably a good time to mention that your Edgetar is not showing. (To me at least.) Drop Edge a PM and he'll gladly reload it for you, I'm sure.
