Yeah, we've all heard these words before... in SRD's works... so one might argue that they should be allowed... but why would we really want that? Do you want this to become a place where profainity is used a lot? Is there really any need for swearing to be allowed, just because Stephen Donaldson uses it as a representation of what the world for his story and as a way for his characters to be shown in a darker light, because they live in dark times... Donaldson didn't use these swear words on a whim people; and neither should we, because really, what is the need?

By the Seven! Stopping the filtering of something doesn't necessarily mean that that something would immediately become plastered everywhere. I can think of a lot of very bad language (in English) that currently isn't filtered but still doesn't appear on this board. I think I shouldn't say them aloud...

If we're not going to use it, then why unfilter it?

I think that we should only use it in places like Quotes... like if we ever get round to doing a Gap Dissection, we can freely use quotes that have these obscene words in.

Maybe you should put a link on the bottom of every section, and let the mods decide what they want for there forum... you said yourself Jay, "I like the Watch to be a board run by the members".

Just an idea.

I'm not against swearing myself, I do it, but only when neccessary...

If we're not going to say it, why filter it?

I view this issue akin to having government-mandated walking helmets. The vast majority of the time they would be utterly needless and if you actually happened to fall down you still would be unlikely to have needed that helmet anyway. I think we on this site are a mature enough bunch to survive without filters, and if we weren't, filters couldn't save the quality of discussion.

By the way, when I've hurt myself, my reaction was, "OUCH!!!"

I think this issue is being blown out of proportion. Why is a relatively benign feature that has been routinely and quietly doing its job all this time suddenly coming under attack? Where's the fire? I just don't see what the fuss is about. I'm not convinced that the filter is somehow chaining our freedom of thought or expression to the ground.

No, you're right, MM. It's not really that big of a deal, and we shouldn't make it a big deal. I just started the topic since I was curious and wanted to open up some discussion, since the issue came up in that "Ban Linden Avery" topic.

Right now, we seem to be pretty evenly split in the poll, so I don't think we're going to change the current Watch policy at all. It seems to have worked well enough for 5 years now, and I haven't been really convinced myself to change it.

But if anyone wants to discuss it some more, you can do so here, or talk to me in private with a PM if something is really bothering you.-jay

Yeah, and Jay'll reply in ten years. :P

Yeah, come to think of it, we are making a big deal out of something that is trival at best... this is like what I mentioned to you in the pm the other day Jay.

That's because he set his PC to explode the moment it received a message from you. Which, ironically, is why he was so sure he'd die before reading it.

You're not supposed to share any information about a pm unless given permission, I think you should be banned. ;)

I'll forgive you this once, on account of your avatar, it had me in bits, I love it! :D :Hail:
