Back in the 80's and 90's my wife and I were both into a few John Hughes produced or directed films. Our favorites were and still are She's Having A Baby, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck. Yes I have them and watch them from time to time.sgtnull wrote:light romantic comedies of the 80's.

Ha, yeah. I'll watch them if there's nothing else on. I take a little solace that Element and Troopers was directed by Luc Besson and Paul Verhoeven, respectively. They’re high on my directors list (though not in Kubrick or Sergio Leone territory).Prom_STar wrote:The Fifth Element

I love both those movies... even though they aren't exactly academy award material.

The best part about The Fifth Element to me is the soundtrack and how well it is woven into the movie (and the fact that the music is awesome).
And yes, I do own both the movie (collector's edition, of course) and the soundtrack. Don't own troopers yet, but that purchase seems inevitable.

Starship Troopers is great (and it's got the lovely Dina Meyer in it).
I only watched The Fifth Element once, and I hated it, especially Chris Tucker's part. Maybe I should give it another try (especailly since Mila's in it).

Good call, aTOMiC. I have both Mummy movies as well and I always enjoy watching them. It honestly puzzles me why they are looked down upon by so many (both critics and movie buffs). I think these were fabulously fun films: really, the perfect summer popcorn entertainment. Great adventure, great humor and some very fine comic timing from the cast. The chemistry between Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser was also pretty special.
Yeah, both Mummy films and the Scorpion King as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sahara as well.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Oh yes, I agree. I was merely commenting that I used to think movies were bad for not following history to a T. I'm no longer such a purist anymore. I realize that movies are, by default, illogical beings at best. I've reconciled my old misgivings. Heck, nowadays I just remind myself, "It's a movie. If you want history go to college or read a book."dlbpharmd wrote: Lord Foul - Braveheart ROCKS!
