SRD says it's a coincidence - someone else had to point it out to him before he even noticed himself.

They both broke a Law, they both lost the SoL, but if he says its coincedince...

I must say it does stretch co-incidence and if I read Warmark correctly, SRD could be playing dumb to avoid opening a line of questioning that might reveal more than he's prepared to right now.

I think the pronounciation of the name "anele" as in "aneal" is more significant.

Well..come to think about it...

..Coincidence?..as alluded to by the above,,SRD has been playing abit of the ole, wink wink, kno what I mean, on the subject. And as pointed out, Both have a certain experience with the Staff of Law.

Interesting to note..Elena was crazy to get it,,and the End she had in store,,bringing back the dead Lords,,wasn't well thought out, blinded by her despair...
...Anele...went crazy for loosing it,,even tho he had serious doubts as to his ability to live up to the demands of being the Staff of Law yeilder,,and, even apon its recovery, still refused it,,in recognition that he still didn't believe he was worthy,,but in the mean time,,had gained a huge knack of being able to hear the deep truths of the Earth.

So, the back ward relationship bewteen the two names can have a certain validity as manifested by the nature of the characters. Elena was blinded by despair,,Anele went blind from living so long in a world he didn't recognize( being transported some 3000 or so years into the future)...by the way,,the " blind " issue with so many of Steves characters also was a coincidence as per author)...anyway, ..

One way to consider the " backward" nature of the two names,,is to consider the opposite qualities or natures o fthe two characters. One was insane to get the Staff,,,,the other went insane for loosing it,,even tho he believed he wasn't capable to live up its demands. One wanted to bring the dead back to life..the other found ancient life( magic) in what was considered lifeless, the Earth....One was the product of a dark event, a rape,,the other a product of a magical event, a pregnancy saved..etc,etc.

The question becomes...will Anele get his hands on the Staff and Have TO Yeild It?,,Anele's reluctancy needs to be healed and or turned around. Perhaps,,in keeping with the backward nature involved with this thread..his " arc" will conclude with his " insanity" teaming with the Staff.

Interesting points, Lurch and Finn both.

A cave Dlb? Not at all. Rather, on top of The Watch, where the mundanely obvious clearly sometimes escapes me. ;)

I'm inclined to call it coincidence myself. 'Anele' reminds me of anile and anneal, two of SRD's particular pet words — the kind he uses in ways that nobody can possibly relate to the strict dictionary definitions. Now, when you think of those two words as used in the Chronicles, they seem very appropriate to Anele, don't they?

Well, I think so. :p

Anele is a word in itself:
anele

\A*nele"\, v. t. [OE. anelien; an on + AS. ele oil, L. oleum. See Oil, Anoil.] 1. To anoint. --Shipley.

2. To give extreme unction to. [Obs.] --R. of Brunne.

Aha!

I thought it was a word, but the merely unabridged dictionary I have on hand (as opposed to the Great Honking Ginormous Oxford) doesn't have it.

Thanks!

I find dictionary.com to be very useful in finding even the most obscure words.

I'm a real geek. thesaurus.com (linked sister site to dictionary.com) is my default home page, but then again, I'm a [sigh, unpublished] author.

Interesting discussion on Anele - Elena. I also question whether or not SRD can be completely open about this question. The duality of these characters juxtaposed next to one another exposes more than mere coindidence. Conscious or unconscious on the part of SRD, time will tell.

Hang in there, my friend. And while you are waiting, why not post your work in the Hall of Gifts forum here?
