How many remakes are better than the original? 
My gut feeling says not very many...
I cannot think of any off the top of my head, but there must be some, or why would the studios keep making so many of them? Or is it just something they do hoping to capture a built-in audience?
Well, perhaps remakes of science fiction movies reflecting better special effects every few decades?

There have been some excellent remakes. I'm thinking of John Carpenter's The Thing, and the '70s remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
But yeah, the gem/crap ratio is way off.

Yeah, Cape Fear's another good one. I'd say the Eastwood westerns which are basically Samurai movie remakes are quite good too.

Remakes
Remake that many consider better than the original (or cetainly just as good) Farewell, my lovely, 1975 starring Robert Mitchum, and based on Raymond Chandler's novel of the same name. The novel was originally brought to the cinema as Murder, my sweet, 1944, starring Dick Powell and directed by Edward Dmytryk.
I think Body Heat was a great remake of Double Indemnity.
