Really?!? I thought Jamey Sheridan did a fine job as Flagg.

You'd do well to do just that, A. It really was as good as it could have been. While Sheridan's Flagg did not have the depth and implied majesty of the written Flagg, he did offer up a "happy to be charmingly evil and in my element" Flagg. The character that was really miscast/miswritten to me was Underwood. His change from selfish taker to an understated everyman was lost in this adaptation.

I'd agree with that. I don't think I really noticed that transition until this last reread.

I think overall the film was relatively well cast. Even the two I was most skeptical about...Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe both aquitted themselves quite well, and I think Lowe did a fantastic job capturing Nick.

Agreed. I liked Nick a lot. Did you ever read the UNABRIDGED version of the Stand?

Yeah, in fact I have no idea where my original copy is. It's one of those very rare cases in which the editing lessened the story.

Agreed. I liked the passages where King showes how some of the survivors of the plague killed themselves foolishly or died accidentally. AND I really liked the passage where Nick and Tom are attacked by the Flagg Twister.

Don't listen to the haters Av. It's not a masterpiece, but it's certainly worth watching.

It's not bad at ALL. I'd give it a "B" on a A-F scale, given its format and production.

I'll weigh in on the side of the yay-sayers here. The Stand mini-series certainly isn't as good as the novel, either version, but it's pretty well-done, nevertheless. I watched the television debut, and I've since watched my video twice, and it's decent enough to merit a look, Avatar.

You should go in with reasonable expectations, not expecting this movie to completely capture the finest post-apocalyptic novel ever written.

I've only seen one film based on a King novel that ever equalled the novel, and in fact, IMHO, even surpassed it in this instance - The Green Mile.

I thought The Dead Zone did a great job too.

The film that is, not the dreadful TV series.

The Dead Zone is quite good indeed. The original Salem's Lot mini-series was great as well (creepy!). The renake with Rob Lowe was not good at all. The shining (Kubrick) while not exactly loyal to the book, was good in its own right.

ah...you've proven my point about Mick Garis.

fyi...David Cronenberg directed The Dead Zone
and Tobe Hooper directed the original Salem's Lot

both directors WAY out rank Mick Garis in experience AND talent.

I thought the Stand was a solid B movie as well. and I thought Molly Ringwald did well in her role. Sheridan can be seen on Law & Order, Criminal Intent btw.

:LOLS:

I dunno, my expectations are pretty low Gunslinger.

And yes, the unabridged version is a much much better one.

I'll see...I might watch it again just to make certain in my own mind that my original assessment is true. But I'm not gonna make it a priority or anything. ;)
