Having grown up in south Florida, I still think of Miami's MetroZoo as my zoo, even though I am now 400 miles away in Gator Town. The destruction and bouncing back from the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew (which happened while I still lived down there) through Hurricane Wilma over the past decade and half is a source of intense community pride, even for those of us no longer living in the community.

Here in Gator Town, our 'Zoo' is completely different, and for me now, an even better place. I don't have my own camera, so I can't share pictures that I have taken, but the Santa Fe Community College Teaching Zoo, while tiny, is a wonderful place to see young, enthusiastic students who plan on being zoo technicians and maybe even zoologists one day. During public visiting hours, visitors to the zoo may find themselves eavesdropping on a lecture/demonstration to a class of serious students (not a 'talk' prepared for the public) on the care of the animals in the area the class is at.

Truly a fascinating few hours well spent whenever I go.

Nice, Spiral Jacobs. Especially like that first pic of the otters! What zoo are those pics from?

They're from Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. Those otters were chillin', just floating around, minding their own business. Here's a few more I took that day:

Thanks :-). I bought a new digital camera last year and I'm very happy with it. The full-size image (2048x1536) is great, you can count the individual hairs.

Dandelion will make you wise

I'm afraid there's no denying

 That's only some of the wildlife that regularly wanders across the grounds. The joys of living in Africa. ;)

Yeah, I guess a zoo doesn't matter as much when the wildlife is right there when you step out your front door.

I don't think I'm off base when I say Africa is arguably the ultimate destination for nature and wildllife photography. I mean, surely any self-respecting pro nature photographer wants to have Africa on his/her resume or portfolio.

Heck, I'd love to go there and shoot pictures all day and all night long, but I probably wouldn't last half an hour out there.
