I see that most of this topic has been concerning vehicles for personal transport, but if any of you have read Zelazny's Chronicles of amber, you know that they, for destinational purposes, are the fastest and most efficient means of transport, allowing almost instantaneous transit from point A to B

That reminds me of a Terry Pratchett line about the only force that moves more quickly than light: Monarchy. Whenever a Monarch dies, Monarchy instantaneously travels from him/her to their heir, no matter what distance may lie between the two. Attempts to create a method of communication through the careful torturing of Kings have been unsuccessful.
