What? I thought that movie was about a volleyball.Matrixman wrote:I loved Cast Away. On paper, the story sounds like a joke: 2 hours or so about a guy stranded on a desert island. But Tom Hanks and company sure made it work! Loved his performance. It also didn't hurt that I like Helen Hunt a lot as an actress.

It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.
I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

You're the first to list Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. I love that movie, too. Was my favorite Western by a wide margin til Unforgiven came along.
The first movie that crossed my mind was the Cannonball Run. It's silly and juvenile, it'll never be on a greatest movies list, but I always have fun watching it. (Okay, I realize Cannonball Run might be scraping the bottom of the barrel, but still...go, Captain USA, go!)

I've never heard of Tapeheads...will check it out.Cail wrote:See, the rub is this. Tapeheads is one of my favorite movies. It is by no means great, and most people who see it simply don't get it. I love it, and I can watch it over and over again. But if I'm compiling a top 10 list (or even a top 20 list), I'll never list it, because it simply doesn't compare to movies like Aliens, Die Hard, Heat, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('77), and the rest of the stuff I listed. Big Trouble in Little China is the same way. Love the movie, but it's hardly a high-quality film.

Cannonball Run and Smokey & the Bandit are perfect examples of what I'm talking about. I know every line in those movies, and will stay up 'till all hours of the night watching them, but it's never occur to me to put either of them in my top 10.
Every line that Jackie Gleason utters in Smokey & the Bandit is pure, unadulterated, gold.

I felt the same way until The Hi-Lo County came along, I don't know why: because it's so hard edge? Because Woody and Billy blow me away? Because it's shot in NM and written by a New Mexican? Because Sam Eliott and James Gammon are the perfect aging cowboys? Because of my undying crush on Penelope Cruz? Or, because the (repeated) theme-song by Carter Burell is so damm cool. (I love Tombstone, Silverado and All the Petty Horses too...)

Just 10?
Here goes!
Cool Hand Luke
Heat Of The Night
Zulu
A Fish Called Wanda
Blazing Saddles
Suddenly Last Summer
Lillies Of The Field
Evil Dead Part II
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
The Time Machine (1960. This movie scared the hell out of me, I was 6 or 7 when I first saw it. Got caught in the basement with a homemade torch and got in a lot of trouble. The parents just didn't understand it was for protection against the Morlocks!)

Be kind to your web-footed friends, for a duck may be somebody's mother.
Got to edit my original and throw the Dark Crystal in there somewhere.
I had forgotten how much I love that movie, even from when I was a kid. I wish I could have met Jim Hensen before he died, he was a hero of mine.

Burt Reynolds was in Cannonball Run. Or are you thinking of The Gumball rally?

Umm...it's been a while since I've seen this response, but....yeah...Joe Vs the Volcano is one of those unsung movies whose brilliance is missed the first time you see the movie. On the surface, it's a dumb little movie. I saw it and enjoyed it a bit, but noticed a few little oddities about it. My girlfriend at the time said, "did you notice that symbol that kept appearing throughout the movie?" We rented it later, tried to figure out where the symbol appeared, tried to figure out what it meant, and it just kept getting better and better with each viewing. There really is a lot of hidden brilliance in that movie. And that girlfriend and I used several lines from it in our wedding ceremony.danlo wrote:Fearless is great-I rank that up there with Mr. Jones. Joe v. Volcano??? Oh well, to each their own...
