To penny, or not to penny
If I gave you the option of having 10 pennies, or NOT having 10 pennies, which would you choose?
FOLLOW UP QUESTION: If you are a penny-hater like me, what do you do with your pennies?
I'd choose not to have the 10 pennies. Also, I throw mine in every pool/fountain I see. I keep them in my purse just so I can get rid of them. On occasion, when tired of them, I've been known to throw them in the trash. I hate pennies and all that they stand for.
If I were to run for President my platform would be the removal of pennies from circulation. (I like hot-button topics.)

i rarely take them home at all. most places that give me pennies also have a little dish or bowl or jar or something to drop them into so people who don't have a penny or two can use them. money sharing.
those pennies that do make it to my house, go in a bowl and when the bowl gets filled, they go in the oxy clean tub and when the oxy clean tub gets filled, they go in wrappers, and when i have enough wrappers to make it worth it, they go to the bank. (i should also add that i do the same with dimes and nickles)
and thats the story of my pennies.
i prefer dollar coins, i like carrying them around. i like paying with them and seeing the look on people's faces when i do so.
i go to the post office and get my stamps with 20 dollar bills just to get the Susan B Anthony's that the machines give you for change.

I seem to amass change. I have a pocketful by the end of my day. I chuck all the change in a big jar and occasionally turn it in for cash. I call the jar "The Boat Fund." Need I say more?

Re: To penny, or not to penny
You can't 'not' have pennies. Negative numbers don't exist in reality -- just in math.Waddley Hasselhoff wrote:If I gave you the option of having 10 pennies, or NOT having 10 pennies, which would you choose?

Do you remember half-cent coins? They used to make the big ones, the size of an old fifty-cent piece, before they brought out the small ones and then eventually did away with them altogether.Avatar wrote:They've taken 1 & 2 cent coins out of circulation here. All that happens is the next smallest pile up. I give them to beggars.

Now, I'm wondering how long 5-cent pieces will be around.

I'm one of the crazy people who will actually bend over on the street to pick up a random penny. I seem to have little caches of them all over the house, and one or two in a pocket of all my coats. Weird, I know.
I used to collect pennies in a Seagram's bottle (it held about ten bucks worth of pennies), but I quit when the banks started making people roll their coins or they wouldn't take them. Now, of course, a lot of places have those machines that will count your change for you. Hmm, I should start collecting change again.
That said, yeah, maybe the US gummint should get out of the penny-minting business. And I wouldn't mind if we switched to the dollar coin -- but to make it work, they'd have to do away with the dollar bill at the same time, and I'm not sure the gummint is willing to get that radical.
The US had a 2-dollar bill for awhile, but people wouldn't use it. It didn't help that we used to have a saying: "As queer as a two-dollar bill."

I have a similar jar, though it only fits about $25 worth of pennies.Cameraman Jenn wrote:I seem to amass change. I have a pocketful by the end of my day. I chuck all the change in a big jar and occasionally turn it in for cash. I call the jar "The Boat Fund." Need I say more?

I remember them...I even have a few of both versions. But they were out of circulation before I knew what money was. I only have them because I collected coins for a while.Edge wrote:Do you remember half-cent coins?

Yeah, I'd be happy if they dumped all the cents coins.
Null, maybe, but not doing so doesn't discourage them, so it's a moot point.

On topic: my pennies and all spare coins go into a jar every day and normally pays for my Glastonbury festival ticket and spending money every year (total about £450)
Slightly off topic: The Monster Raving Loony Party (ie political party) in UK - one of their policies (tho I can't now find it on their page) is the introduction of a 99p coin. Anyway, here's their page, good for a laugh...
