What blogs do you read?

Post by Zarathustra »

Do you all read any blogs? I haven't read many, but I've thought about starting one. I was interested in getting your opinion about the kinds of blogs people like to read.

I read Xar's and Murrin's occasionally.
That's about it.

I generally just read author blogs--Jeff VanderMeer, Hal Duncan, Nick Mamatas, Jay Lake, Elizabeth Bear, and John Scalzi's are the ones I keep up with most. The why is, they often give insight into the writing process (Nick not so much, but he's also an editor who doesn't hold back on criticism, so he occasionally posts things that are very good demonstrations of what/how not to submit), as well as (these particular authors) generally being intelligent, interesting and often entertaining.
But I'll read all sorts of stuff as long as it's interesting.

That's actually a heck of an idea! I'd pay money to read that (or, um, at least WGDs....) :)

I read friends blogs and occasionally post in one. I'm terrible at keeping it up though.

The only thing I read when I get the chance is www.mil-millington.com/
I'm not quite sure if you would classify it as a blog of sorts but it certainly does pass the time.

I've been reading about making money with your blog. There are people who are quite good at it. One guy went from $0 to $3000/month in just 15 months, and his readership keeps going up every month. That would be a sweet way to make some money.

I don't swear by any of them. I occasionally go to Michelle Malkin's site.

I was thinking something more like this:
www.stevepavlina.com/

In fact, I'm really jealous of this guy, because he makes money writing about stuff that I feel strongly about, too. Levels of consciousness. Authenticity (though he doesn't use that word). The "10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job" really hit home. That's exactly what I think.

So anyway, I've been trying to think of a way to do something similar, and yet still my own. And then I realized that there's lot's of "touchy-feeling," "New Agey" stuff on this guy's site which doesn't resonate with me. So I was thinking of taking it more in a direction that reflects my personality more. Enlightenment for Meat Eaters or Enlightenment for Conservatives or Nonp*ssies . . . something like that. :) Enlightenment for Arrogant Bastards? Maybe. (I swear, if any of you steal my idea, I'll send you a very arrogant PM . . . )

I think there are lots of people out there who are interested in raising their consciousness and personal development, but who still like a good steak. I don't know why this kind of thinking should be monopolized by liberal, crunchy-granola vegans.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there aren't lots of atheist, meat-eating, conservative people interested in consciousness expansion articles delivered by a guy who can be an asshole sometimes. But I just think the idea is funny enough that there has to be an audience.

Anyway, check out Steve's blog. This guy built it from scratch, did zero marketing, and now has millions of readers. That's an amazing achievement.

I don't really read blogs on a regular basis. I waste too much time reading forums as it is. :P
