As Sung by Cat Stevens
lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon
Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word
Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
G-ds re-creation of the new day

you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?
~ alan bates, the mothman prophecies
i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

My fave - Portobello Road
grrr not on youtube.Getting hung up all day on smiles
Walking down portobello road for miles
Greeting strangers in indian boots,
Yellow ties and old brown suits
Growing old is my only danger
Cuckoo clocks, and plastic socks
Lampshades of old antique leather
Nothing looks weird, not even a beard
Or the boots made out of feathers
I'll keep walking miles 'til I feel
A broom beneath my feet
Or the hawking eyes of an old stuffed bull across the street
Nothing's the same if you see it again
It'll be broken down to litter
Oh, and the clothes everyone knows
That dress will never fit her
Getting hung up all day on smiles
Walking down portobello road for miles
Greeting strangers in indian boots,
Yellow ties and old brown suits
Growing old is my only danger

whatever other way you wanted to talk about him.
and unless you're gonna talk about his religion (the close) or his politics (the tank) or both (still the tank) this belongs in vespers anyway.

Cat Stevens is among my top half-dozen favorite musical acts. (Beatles, Cat, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen) As for non-musical thoughts...
I've always thought that his music spoke of someone searching. Seeing tv specials on him later said that was, indeed, the case. He went through religions, philosophies, even numerology (ence the album Numbers).
Finally, of course, he became a Muslim. Some of the interviews from after he converted are great. We see a man who found all the peace and joy he had so obviously been looking for. I was extremely happy for him.
Here's a half-hour to watch that says a whole lot more.

Alas, I strongly disagree with the most publicized aspect of his beliefs: that Salman Rushdie should be killed for having written whatever it was he wrote. In the interview I saw, he was repeatedly asked if he believed Rushdie should die for it. He would never give a Yes or No answer. He just kept saying something like, "It's not a matter of belief. It's in the Qu'ran."

Flat out broke into tears in front of Cailette this summer seeing him perform last summer at the Diana concert.
Cat Stevens is the soundtrack to some of my best childhood memories.

Why isn't this thread in Vespers?
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion
I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.
