I'd go with "Nom" in WGW and what Trell asked Cov in the beginning of LFB after Lena told him of his battle with the cloud on our humble home, here-thinking that Trell might believe Lena had made it up in a hero worship kind of way, Trell surprises us by asking, "Which one was the victor?"

I just loved how that simple setup explained much about who Trell really is.

I can't decide.....either "We suffice", or "There's only one way to hurt a man with nothing left to lose....you give him back something broken"

The Nature of Power

Post by Welcome »

With so many powerful, resonating quotes within the Chronicles it's impossible to say which is my favorite. However, the following passage absolutely mesmerizes me as High Lord Mhoram searches his soul, grappling to reconcile the fact he possesses the knowledge to invoke a Ritual of Desecration against the necessity to avoid succumbing to this temptation even in the face of Lord Foul's complete subjugation of the free peoples of the Land. This eloquent passage was a huge motivator in constructing my Stephen R. Donaldson tribute web site which proved to be emotionally cathartic.

Sandor Szabo

"He could taste in his own mouth the desperation which had led High Lord Kevin to Kiril Threndor and the Ritual of Desecration. Power was dreadful and treacherous. When it was not great enough to accomplish its wielder's desires, it turned against the hands which held it. High Lord Elena's fate only repeated the lesson of Kevin Landwaster; he had possessed far more power than the new Lords could ever hope for, now that the Staff of Law was gone; and all his might had achieved nothing but his own ineluctable despair and the ruin of the Land. Mhoram feared to share that danger by revealing his secret. He was appalled to think he was in such peril himself."

after having just read FR and then listened to the audio book, I feel that Stave will turn out to be the most quotable of all.
but perhaps i shouldnt go into that on this part of the forum.

i always thought that
...give him back something broken
or
Nom
where the best, but after reading through this thread i cannot believe i forgot about
we suffice
the hair stood up on the back of my neck even when i read it here.

Some of my best "goose bumb-moments" have already been mentioned.

But even now I get chills quoting these:

Covenant, after tasting the first aliantha in TWL:
"Oh dear God," he murmered brokenly. "There's Earthpower yet."
And Vain in WGW:
"It is not death. It is puprose. We will redeem the Earth from Corruption."
"You won't find ordinary people here" (Don DeLillo - Running Dog)
"You stared at me till your eyeballs smoked. Was it anger, or love, or the caffeine in your Coke?" -Was (not Was)

I have to add a thing or two....."There is Hope in contradiction"...I've always likes that one...also the one about "There's only one way to hurt a man who has lost everything....give him back something broken..."....but the Ultimate Quote ( at least to me) is...."We suffice". That statement is so succinct & to the point, it's almost scary!....the last one to be mentioned, is the TC quote outside Revelstone..."Nom"...the first time I read that, my reaction was one of "OMG, what the %%% is about to happen ?!?!?!?

"Giant, do you know me?"

I don't think up until that point we really saw how much in need TC was for a connection to his previous trip to the Land and how much he missed Foamfollower.

Same here. As does, "Gossamer Glowlimn, I love you."

And, "He's on fire."

There's a lot that goes on throughout the series involving the Haruchai that make me laugh. Their dispassionate demeanor often provides comic relief for me. Here's one I just read,

"Stave raised his eyebrows as if she had contrived to pierce his impassivity."
Covenant is Linden Frankenstein's monster.

This is a paraphrase, because I don't have the books right here in front of me. I believe it's stated and re-stated a number of times throughout the First Chronicles. I believe Atiaran is the first to say it to
TC, and its power always moves me, no matter how many times I read it:

"It is the duty of the living to give meaning to the sacrifices of the dead."
