Yes, I thought carrot.
Anyone have an explanation of this? I have a half-baked theory, but nothing to back it up but uninformed psychological speculation.
your theory would be welcome. it's driving me nuts.
Spoiler
but only thing I can figure out is carrot is six letters.
but then again so is tomato.

I assume this late in the thread I can speak openly and not have to spoiler this reasoning...

While I am probably opening myself up for some criticism of my pop-psych approach, my thought is that the repetition of the numeric answer reinforces the association with a near-homonym that then sets up many to think of a vegetable with a phallic form...thus the prevalent answer.

It is interesting to see that all males so far have had either that answer or one with a similar form-factor. The Women of the Watch have responded with a greater variety of answers...only one chose the expected answer and some of the others had a commonality of form-factors suggesting a similar line of derivation, but from a gender-appropriate difference of perspective.

Edit: the number-of-letters explanation did not even occur to me -- but then I am male... Very interesting theory, certainly deeper than mine!

At first I thought of a
Spoiler
Banana
...but its REALLY not a veg

So I ended up saying
Spoiler
Turnip
...which is LIKE a
Spoiler
carrot
I guess.

But what IS a vegetable really?

Anything that we call a vegetable, could either be a fruit, like a tomato or a cucumber; or a bean like a pea or corn, or a leaf like lettuce or spinach or a root like turnips and parsnips, or a flower like broccoli.

So I say DAMMIT...its okay to call a tomato a vegetable!!
I thought you were a ripe grape
a cabernet sauvignon
a bottle in the cellar
the kind you keep for a really long time

In your face, Mind Trick!

Also, in the US, tomato is legally a vegetable. The all mighty Supreme Court decided that in 1893 in the famous Nix v. Hedden case.

Cauliflower has always reminded me of brains, but somehow I don't think you are commenting on that aspect of those guys, are you? ;)
