And now, Mr. Death, you get to learn what it means to make the Somefather look bad! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
(Don't worry, though. Ceanusar will be the first to go. Time to get even!!!! )

That's funny. I don't remember *any* of those characters from the Malazan books....Onos T'oolan wrote:And now, Mr. Death, you get to learn what it means to make the Somefather look bad! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Due to this forum, and that I read that SRD is a fan of Erikson, I went to my local library and checked out his Gardens of the Moon.
There were only three Erikson books available, so I picked out the oldest of them. Can someone list the Mazalan books in chronological order for me? That would be a great help.
Also: The reason I chose this topic to post in is because last night I was introduced to Kruppe for the first time. What an incredible character! I love Kruppe! His dreams are an ingenious fictional invention on Erikson's part, and the character is funnier than hell too. But I also see that there's way more to Kruppe than meets the eye.
A very good read so far, even though there are enough characters running around to fill a small stadium. Thank goodness for the scorecard at the front of the book!
Crepuscularly yours,

in order chronologically:
Night of Knives (ian cameron esselmont)
Gardens of the Moon (erikson)
Deadhouse Gates (erikson)
Memories of Ice (erikson)
House of Chains (erikson)
Midnight Tides (erikson)
The Bonehunters (erikson)
Reaper's Gale (erikson)
Toll the Hounds (erikson)
Return of the Crimson Guard (esslemont)
in case you're unaware, there are actually 15 projected books in the series.
Erikson is writing 10 of them and Esslemont is writing 5 of them.
they are partners and created the world together (whilst playing a
modified version of AD&D)
so if you started with GotM then you've started in the right place.
Night of Knives actually takes place prior to GotM but wasn't published
until erikson was well into the series, thus, it doesn't really require that
you read it first so you can go back at anytime and read that one.

Hey, thanks!
I got lucky and started at the beginning!
Strangely, it doesn't feel like a first book of a series. I keep getting the impression that I'm woefully uneducated in some seriously byzantine backstory that must somewhere have already been told.
I am enjoying the story though. This is really my first taste of the fantasy genre - other than Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of TC - in a long time.

Yeah, I read a review or three that several times mention Erikson's unorthodox practice of starting these tales in the middle of nowhere (figuratively speaking).
It's a relief to learn that my initial (and ongoing) confusion is universal.

I was fooled by Kruppe , at first ( GOTM ) I found him to be tedious, a distraction from everything relevant, but then as the story started to take root I found myself fascinated by him, and by the end of the story he had become my favorite character. Im still pretty new to Malazan having only read GOTM, and KON but could he possibly be Patron of Thieves?

Currently reading GotM again. Lots more times when Kruppe uses magic.Murrin wrote:Everyone forgets the scene in Gardens of the Moon where he walks down through the market using magic to carry sweets through the air to his sleeves.
-In the dream when he helped the Mhybe and Pran Chole get Tattersail into the Mhybe's fetus:
-When he, Coll, Crokus, and Murillio were attacked by Lorn:Surreptitiously, Kruppe cast a spell uon himself, then looked at her yet again.
-When Murillio angrily confronted him, having figured out he was the Eel:Lorn smiled as the fat man attempted to open a Warren and failed. (Because of her sword.)
"No more magical cantrips, Kruppe. I've known you a long time, remember? I've seen you cast spells. You've got everybody fooled, but not me. I'm not telling, though. You don't have to worry about that." He smiled. "Then again, if you don't come out with it here and now, I might get annoyed."
Sighing, Kruppe returned the handkerchief to his sleeve. "Annoyance is uncalled for," he said, waving a hand and fluttering his fingers.
Murillio blinked, suddenly dizzy. He rubbed his forehead and frowned. What had they just been talking about? It couldn't have been important.
