Registration Question

Post by Fire Daughter »

Hi everyone,

My little brother, Stephen Isaiah would like to register here. He turned ten a month ago, which is a little young. But, he has an amazing mind. I told him that I would ask you all to see if it would be alright for him to register. Believe it or not, he has already read the First and Second Chronicles and is beginning Runes.

I just thought I would be a good idea to get approval from the rest of the board before I let him register. If you think he is too young, I, and he, will certainly understand. He just feels he needs to be on the board. He did say, "If they say no, it is alright, I can wait. All things come in their own time..." He is his mother's son, and his uncle's nephew. :-)

Let me know what you all think. :-)

For Mom--
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

Fly...fly high against the sky...
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you
The wind beneath my wings

I think that's your call, FD, not ours. Only you can know if the things he might stumble into here are things you wish to keep from his eyes. There's a lot more going on than TC discussions. And even those are sometimes PG17. OTOH, there's much worse elsewhere on the web, of coarse, and so if he already has unfettered access to the web, this site won't be the one which corrupts his spirit. If it could be - I am guessing that a strong spirit is part of his make-up.

I'm with WF. If you think he'll be fine with it, then and you're fine with it, then I don't see why we wouldn't be. Officially of course we will have to disavow any responsibility. ;)

It is, of course, a decision that Russ and the rest of you will need to make...but from all you have told us of the lad, I am eager for the day when he joins the community. I want to read what he has to say!

When it is decided the time is right, may he thrive here and contribute.

Hi Fire Daughter,

I agree with what the others have said. Your brother sounds very bright (reading the Chrons at ten, wow! 8O )

I have just a couple of suggestions:
  • - it would be a good idea to check out the whole forum (if you are not already familiar with it). Some parts are fairly uncompromising e.g. the 'Tank (any thread) and the Close (e.g. the Depression thread). I think it would be a good idea to have a look at some of those places. (Even forums like the Galley and Mallory's are posted in under the assumption of a membership with an adult level of experience and maturity.)

    - it may be possible for the mods to limit the forums that a person has access to. If your brother's main interest is the Chrons then it could be possible to organise that only those forums are accessible to him. (I would add the caveat that while the 1st and 2nd Chrons forums are generally positive and stimulating, the Last Chrons forum has some very harsh criticism of those books (and SRD). This is especially the case for The Last Dark.)
Personally, I would be very happy to welcome your brother here (it is the Watch, after all! ) so that his thoughts and insights could add to the Light of this wonderful place.

Maybe, but not sure. Usually it works the other way round...everybody else has to have access. But I'll look into it.

Thank you, everyone. :-) There is no need to go to the trouble of restricting his access to certain parts of the Watch. He mainly wants to join so he can post to Mom's threads in the Hall and the Dissecting The Land Forums.

Unfortunately, he understands things no 10 year-old should. But, he is far beyond his years and his comprehension of what goes on in the world exceeds mine, our Dad's and even my grandmother's. I guarantee he will render you speechless after he starts posting.

Thank you again for your input. You can expect to see him soon. :-)

Can someone please PM me the fax number to send the permission form? We did not see it anywhere in the email.

Or, can I just state mine and Dad's permission here? Dad is willing to log in and say it is alright.

Thanks. :-)

Hey all,

Yeah, it's ok. It's something he really want to do. I can sign and fax the form too if needed.

Hope you are all well.

Like, seriously? I never looked for one. I guess such things exist. Of course, most of the time, the registerer gives a fake birth year. Anyway, he's already registered, eh?

He is...just not activated. When we did the registration, we clicked on the link that said he was under 13. That's probably why we got that permission thing.

I am sure we will clear this up quickly.

Let's be real. Registration only gates posting. FireSon has always been able to read whatever is in the Watch...and we want him to be able to post.

Ah! I forgot about the "under 13" thing. Having registered as many usernames here as I have, you'd think I'd've remembered that.

Haha, damn, what? It's build into the software for the board probably. It's not a Watch thing.

Probably everybody else who ever did it just lied. ;) (Learn a lesson FD.) ;)

Ignore the form, really. :D

I'll see if I can manually activate him. What's his user name?

[edit: Don't worry, I figured it out. :D

Ok, he's active. :D ]
