Gosh - this has gotten all fired up!

The execution thing is really difficult, but whether you are pro or anti, if it is going to be done it has to be done with humanity. Bitting dogs are euthanased in veterinary practice all the time, but never with pleasure and never with cruelty. It is done as an act of necessity, not of punishment. One of the problems of recent executions in the US is the alarming number of them that have been botched.

In respect of public shaming - in the UK this is already done all the time in the form of newspaper articles and reports, and the public judgement that results therefrom. Often it is probably more effective than the state subscribed punishment as a deterrent. We had one guy who used to come into the shop who got his kicks out of getting butt naked on farms at night and smearing himself with cow-shit. Didn't see much of him after that report made the front page of the local press!

On a much cheerier note, Nigeria has been declared Ebola-free. For now. On a personal note, another new friend in Liberia succumbed. His children have lost their mom, grandmother, and aunt; two of them are in the hospital. :( But any good news about Nigeria is great news.

Wow deer! That brings home at a personal level something which hitherto has just been 'reports of events' occuring a long long way away. Sadness for your friend and their family. The world may at last be starting to appreciate the severity of what is occuring in Africa!
