Physical strength. Like if they had to lift a heavy weight, the roll would determine their success or failure. :D

Well it isn't. Take Malazan for example: both Erikson and Esslemont have this terrible habit of thinking that authorial reticence is equal to subtlety, which is simply not the case. There is nothing subtle about Malazan, the withholding of information merely tricks the reader into thinking their world has more depth than a few hundred strength rolls, bags of cheetos and liters of Mountain Dew.

Stephen King couldn't write himself out of a paper bag, where most of his writing belongs... lit and on someone's front porch.

And Outlander is mere escapism... it can hardly be considered as possessing any attribute close to "literary".

I have been trying to think of a way to lure her back here.

and yes, shaft is the correct term for the leg part of the boot.

the top of your foot is the instep
the curvy part on the sole is your arch
lots of people say top when they mean instep
and instep when they mean arch
just covering all the bases here. :D

But surely you know other topics.

Aha. I refer to the top as anything that extends above the ankle, but figured that was probably oversimplifying things.

My favourite luci-bait is the high and low-literature one. Usually if you just mention (as Av did above) that some books are 'literature' and some aren't, you can get a Luci-Rant™ almost instantly.

Luckily I can do this sincerely any time as I strongly believe that there is 'literature' and dreck:
  • The Chronicles v Twilight
I rest my case!

Right. Now we ken everything about anatomically correct shoes and sorus' lury wiles.
What with having completed The Crippled God a couple of days back, I shall not hear any nefarious blasphemies against Erikson/Malazan either from the worm-tongued mouths of heretics. None. Else the sword shall become unsheathed. Esslemont on the other hand...

All may not be cognizant of Squashy's undying (undead?) adoration of sparkly vampires, so of course in the post above he conveniently forgot to mention which item belongs beneath the title of dreck...

tempted to tell you about the last 3 RL conversations I've had with people where I was like, "I wonder if I should read 'Heart of Darkness' for the first time?"

Then I would be like, "What do you say to this, lucimay... do you have anything more convincing to say?"

But you can sorta see why I was having trouble believing Orlion said that.. no dex rolls, no int, no wil.. just strength rolls.
Definitely makes it funnier though.

Well, that would just be unwieldy.

And strength rolls have the added feature of being associated with combat, of which Malazan has a lot of...RPG style combat :P

Hi luci!

I've been able to replace bloody sauvakävely with proper cross-country skiing! Snow prospects seemed miserable a mere month agone, now 20-30cm of the supportive ilk coats the ground (WHY does English not possess a proper expression for something as simple and logical as kantohanki?). It's rather more strenuous when you plow your own own trail, and requires some getting used to. Will try a longer journey during the weekend, when such a rarity as daylight pales the horizon.

(Googling)

I think "packed snow" would get the job done, more or less. ;)

It gets the job done, but the other is much more fun to say.

Just got some bad news, friend of ours' daughter had a bad horse-riding accident, and is in an induced coma with bleeding on the brain. Apparently the prognosis is not good.

Sorry to hear that, Av. Hope she recovers.

Snowpocalypse 2015 passed us by, which I'm not at all upset about. Wondering how lorin's doing -- they were forecasting up to 36 inches for her neck of the woods, but the NYC forecast was a bust, so maybe Lawn Guyland didn't get hammered, after all.

I hope things work out, Av. Medically induced comas can be very beneficial.
