No idea what the appeal is. To me he just sounds like he can't play his guitar very well.

CJ and I may not agree on some things,but to this I must say bravo.

I have respect for Hendrix, as he was a pioneer.

But I can't listen to him. He's just too sloppy.

Sometimes sloppy-with-feeling is better than presice-without-soul. One could make a similar judgement of Jimmy Page, but he's fantastic.

You've got to look at these people in their historical context. That's the reason you're not getting them. Hendrix was ground breaking. He played in a way and with a tone that no one had ever experienced before. There was a reason he was blowing people's minds. Try to see through their eyes. Learning to appreciate music which you're not raised to love is almost exactly like learning to appreciate a culture you're not born into.

It's like Eddie Van Halen's first CD. Listen to it in its context. Rock music was becoming bloated and brooding. Zepplin and Black Sabbath. The opposite of youthful, fun, exuberance. Then comes this 17-yr-old kid who plays in a way no one has heard before, with a band that stresses the party nature of rock and roll. Sure, legions of guitarists picked up Eddie's tricks, and lesser bands took the party attitude to new lows. But Eddie was the first to achieve this sound, and his band reinvigorated this attitude. It was revolutionary at the time.

Give credit to the pioneers who blazed the trails (or ruts) that music is now rolling through.

Oh I'm getting them Malik, been playing guitar for 25 years. Comparing Jimmy Page to Jimi Hendrix is sort of like comparing......Hell, I don't know, insert a ridiculous comparison here....Filet mignon to a bag of Cheetos.

Hendrix broke ground, but I'd argue that there's very little emotion (or "feel" if you like) to his playing. Page is all about feel.

IOW, just because someone was first doesn't make them good.

Last I'll say about Hendrix.....

There are a couple of things he did that were absolutely breathtaking. But that's it, just a couple. Most of his stuff makes me cringe it's so sloppy (and yes, the same can be said about a lot of live Page, especially in '77).

Looking at Jimi's overall body of work, I don't think it compares favorably with Page's, Clapton's, or Beck's.

Hell, even though Hendrix did it first, SRV did it better.

I recall Pete Townsend talking about how all of them at the time (himself, Page, Clapton, etc) all were cowed and intimidated by Hendrix and his abilities. That is saying something.

To you, maybe.

To me it seems like heaping praise on someone who died too young, and wasted their talent getting f-ed up rather than playing.

i'll repeat this here but i think i posted it elsewhere in the Hendrix discussions...

i don't remember which it was that said it but the first time Thrashmaster Townsend and Slowhand Clapton heard Hendrix play live, one leaned over to the other and said "I think we're out of a job!" i think Clapton told that story on some Hendrix documentary.


my favorite guitarists, none of which i think is any "better" than the other.

well...we all have our heros, i'd imagine. i personally wouldn't want to carry Gilmour's jock and i doubt Townsend would either, but hey, to each his own!!

i should say that all those guys also learned from the same sources, BLUES players. all of them. they all digested what they'd learned and spit it back out in different ways. they each "progressed" blues derivitive rock playing in their own ways.

Nick Cave - Pretentious, badly-sung rubbish, and repetitive.
Nirvana - About as revolutionary as making crap music marketable.

His name is Dave Grohl right? Yes he seems to have alot of influence in various musical circles. I recently watched some huge free concert on Direct TV, in England or somewhere like that--Fighters put on a pretty good show! (It's the Goo-Goo Dolls I'd rather do without.)

Yeah, but for all the pub Grohl gets, you'd think he was David Geffen (a wealthy music and movie producer) who is an arch enemy of Neil Young, who vehemently disagrees with his ideas of creative expression and merchandising...
