He was terrified of my Dad. My Dad was in great shape in those days and had arms like Popeye. On top of which it wasn't like we were on an actual date. Kenny was a member of the loser crowd and I wasn't. I asked him to spite an asshole jock guy who asked me. Poor guy spent the whole evening in a state of anxiety which probably wasn't helped when we got pulled over after the prom on our way to a party and hauled into to the police station for minors in possession of alcohol. But the evening was over for him then because his mom picked him up and took him home while my dad dropped me off at the party.

Oh, no, it wasn't anxiety ridden at all. It just didn't go the way I expected it to. I actually didn't go to my prom, because the girl I liked (a sophomore) was dating another guy who was enough of a friend that I wouldn't ask her out. Anyway, two years after I graduated, I was working at a store and a cashier who obviously liked me asked me to go to her prom, so I agreed, but I have to admit, I wasn't very interested in either her or the prom. I thought I was, or at least I figured I'd get caught up in the mood, but really, I found the whole thing boring. I ended up hanging out with my friends while she hung out with hers. I was old enough to drink, but I don't think I did, so there were no arrests that night.

I've been to four proms. Two my Junior year, and one my senior year, and then one the year after that. I went for my girlfriend's prom who was a year under me. Actually, I take that back - we had broken up by this point, but she didn't have anybody to go with to her senior prom, so she invited me as she was my date for my senior prom.
For my Junior year, I asked a friend of a friend to go to our prom, and I didn't really know her, and I was in love with someone else. The girl I was in love with asked me to her prom as a friend. Well, the night before the prom with the friend of a friend, the girl I was in love with and I made our feelings known to each other and she became my first real girlfriend that night. So that made for a very awkward next night at the prom with this lady I didn't know. But I let her know right away, and she made it clear she was there to be with her friend, so it didn't matter. I relaxed after that, but was seriously pining. Then my new girlfriend's prom at her school was fun, and we got a hotel room with some other friends. We all got drunk and obnoxious and played in the bathtub, running water into the room below us. The cops showed up, kicked out everyone who wasn't the ones who paid for the room (my girlfriend and I) and, well, that was kind of the way I wanted it anyway. That was a good night.
Senior year was nearly uneventful. Y'see, I had a particular dancing style that was described to me as Free Style. It was my own, and kinda punk influenced according to my sister, which made sense as I hung out at underage punk clubs, but also hung out with the New Wave crowd. Well, at some point while I was dancing, I had one of those weird "movie" moments. The floor cleared around me, and a cheerleader that I was in choir and honors choir (madrigals) with started dancing with me. She was a friend, but one of the jocks got out on the floor and apparently started making fun of me. I didn't see him, thankfully. But apparently he looked like a complete dork and people ignored him and he stopped. It's a pity, because I would have loved to have seen some jackass get humiliated like that. Score one for the misfits!

dlb IS the ultimate southern gentleman. He could easily have charmed that many ladies into prom dates.

He probably even owned his own tuxedo so he wouldn't have to rent them all the time.
