I've always liked the laid-back soloing style that James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers occasionally adopts during their later work. I particularly like the b-side Valley Boy, which has a solo the technical aspects of which seem at odds with the languid overall feel of the piece.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

"Don't Turn Your Back" - Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult)
There is just something pure, understated, and eloquent about this solo. Not sure how else to describe it.

I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids. ~Gen. Jack D. Ripper
A lot of Buck's solos are like that. The guy's just cool like that, but he can still rip out something intense like the solo on "Lips in the Hills".

Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations (Dire Straits)
Much as I love everything MK has ever did and does, I am a bit sorry he has gone in the direction of this softy folk instead of the old raw talking blues.
Pink Floyd: Wearing the Inside Out - it's a Rick Wright song, but Gilmour delivers a sweet solo at the end
Pretty much any live rendering of Embryo, Fat Old Sun, Obscured By Clouds/When You're In, Cymbaline, Careful... and Echoes by PF. Also the searing outro solo of Pigs (3DO) on the Animal Instincts concert bootleg.

Oh yeah, the outro solo on Pigs is brilliant. Never heard it live.

Thank you! It sounds great.

That's normally what I'd do, but that option doesn't present itself.

The outro solo on "Pigs: Three Different Kinds" is so few notes, but it's played so powerfully that it still blows me away. Add to that "Sorrow", "Not Now John", the solo for Brian Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough", and every freakin' note on the "About Face" album (especially the "Murder" solo.
Jimmy Page has got some great stuff, but my favorite solo of his, follow me here, was on the B side of the 12" dance remix of The Firm's "Radioactive" single. The song is called "Live in Peace", originally from one of Paul Rodger's solo albums, later on "Mean Business" by The Firm. That one's a killer, and it's been as good every time I've seen it live.
"A Piece of Time" by Andy Summers
"In My Car" by Joe Walsh
"Astronomy" by BOC/Buck Dharma
"In My Dreams" by Dokken/George Lynch
"Me Wise Magic" by Van Halen/Eddie Van Halen-note for note, this song is the most technically perfect guitar playing I've ever heard....And I've been playing for 25 years.
"Like a Prisoner" by Eric Clapton
