When Gerrit Appeldoorn and Joan Horton meet, the two have nothing in common other than the fact that they are both widowed.

I took LFB to class to read during the lunch break... and I couldn't even get all the way through "Golden Boy." Very early in that first chapter, Covenant is remembering his time with Joan - how supportive she was, and how happy he was with her. Just a few words painted such a joyful, vibrant portrait of her that I had to put the book down for fear I'd start crying and make a fool of myself. Knowing how she has ended up, especially in her translation to the Land, makes those first few pages of LFB heartbreaking. The change was not so startling to me in the Second Chronicles, probably because TC spent so much time remembering her and bemoaning her abandonment that I didn't feel very sorry for her. Now, though... she may have wanted to protect Roger, but in no world could she have possibly imagined that she would fall so far. The only saving grace might be that she is no longer lucid enough to realize how far she's fallen.

There's a great deal about Joan that I never paid much attention to, but I'm coming to realize how absolutely integral she is to the story, and how tragic a character.

Indians who could buy or fashion them preferred saddles with stirrups for the same reason the Ancient Goths had invented stirrups to start with. It felt dumb to fall off a horse.
