I've just been informed that I won a copy of Night of Knives by IC Esselmont. I'm ridiculously pleased about this.
Thank you to pat5150 for giving people the opportunity to win these books.

Crikey....I just finished The Bonehunters, what a ride...again. And another series that is ongoing and I need to wait until the next book comes out. Darn, I hate that. But I will definitely need to reread this...there's just too much going on. How does Erikson keep it all together?

My favorites: Deadhouse Gates and Midnight Tides.

I like how Erikson manages to insert some comedy, although some of it seems rather superfluous. Example (very minor spoiler):
Spoiler
the artist and his toad critic, who are in Memories of Ice and The Bonehunters, really do not seem to have anything to do with anything
I laughed out loud at the unexpected joke by a T'lan Imass, though :D

One thing: If I ever read about a character who 'scowls' again, I'm going to scream. That word is literally on every page.

i heard about these two Malazan novellas;Blood Follows and The Healthy Dead. has anybody read them and where do they 'fit in'?

DHG is FAR, FAR, superior to GotM. I felt that GotM was very entertaining but failed to really draw me in to the story. I've a couple of hundred of pages left of DHG and regard it, so far, as one of the best books i've read, fantasy or otherwise.

one question that needs spoilering
Spoiler
How did the Wickan warlocks destroy the Semk god? something to do with an ice mountain but i struggled to follow it coherantly. is it something that is explained at a later point? if so, then i'll just have to wait. can anybody help?

Darn, now I have to reread it before I can answer your question. How unlucky for me ;-).

I looked it up. To answer your question:
Spoiler
When the Wickan warlocks go to kill the Semk god, they summon earth spirits that rip it apart. The Semk god is embedded in a Jaghut glacier which is slowly melting
(page 428-430 of Bantam mass market edition)

Does that answer your question? There's more, but I don't want to spoil it for you ;)

yeah, that answers it well enough for now. thanks. so its Jaghut is it? interesting.....

One entry found for sapper.
Main Entry: sap·per
Pronunciation: 'sa-p&r
Function: noun
1 : a military specialist in field fortification work (as sapping )
2 : a military demolitions specialist

I love the sappers in these books, they always supply the fun. Especially in Deadhouse Gates:
Spoiler
the sappers on the Chain of Dogs, with the mysterious captain...and that time when there's a battle and in the midst of it all the sappers rise out of the ground, grinning like madmen and wreaking havoc
(well at least that's how I remember it...)

Wow, thanks for that link, by the way!

Edit: whoa I never picked up that
Spoiler
Kallor's former empire was turned into the Imperial warren
! Reading on, there's bound to be more that I missed.

That wikipedia article has been a bit of a project for me recently. Pop in now and then to correct the Deck, and I added a whole bunch of gods to the "Gods and Ascendants" section (in fact, I renamed it "gods and ascendants" myself when I expanded it). Warning to anyone looking at that page - the Deck is fully up to date. That means cards and people who hold those cards are listed as it stands in the Bonehunters (or if not mentioned, by the most recent information), so there are spoilers!
I'm not at all responsilbe for any other part of the page, though - I just like playing around, making sure the Deck is still right, checking I haven't missed a god off the list (I've missed many, but don't have the books to check).

Very cool Murrin. In that case, I was wondering about something I read about the decks:
Spoiler
The list has the Seguleh Second as Soldier of High House Death, based on the Bonehunters. I don't remember even seeing the word Seguleh in the entire book, but I'm probably wrong (having read it only once). Whereabouts does this become apparent I the book? I think the Seguleh are extremely cool, by the way :)

ooh!!! Murrin!!!! you rock!!

ps...seguleh ARE cool. 8)

(Bonehunters spoilers below)
Spiral Jacobs:
Spoiler
The Soldier carries a Seguleh mask tied to his undead horse. Cutter recognises it, and when the Soldier realises Cutter is Daru, he asks about his "mortal brethren", whom he appears to hold in disdain. He indicates that they used to serve a Tyrant, and now await this Tyrant's return. (He also makes some cryptic comments that seem to indicate that the T'orrud Cabal, the group of mages in Darujhistan that included Baruk and Mammot, were more than just ordinary mages, and might have been alive since this Tyrant ruled Darujhistan.)
All of this, by the way, appears to be a set up for Cutter to go back home to Darujhistan, and perhaps is the beginning of a background setup for Toll the Hounds, which will be set on Genabackis.

I'm 100 pages into Gardens of the Moon. I haven't read about a garden yet, but I did read about the moon, so I think the book is paced okay, considering there's 550 pages left to bring up the whole garden thing. If I had to classify this book based upon what I've read so far, I'd say it was a bit more Fantasy than say, Sci-Fi, Autobiography, Get Rich Quick, or Cookbook. All in all I find it to not be too complicated for me, which is likely due to the fact that I'm a mod here, which, by default, means I'm prettier and smarter than everybody else here. That being said, it is complex enough to keep even my superior intellect engaged, but I have to say I still prefer the more defined random killing sprees of George Martin to the less specific random killings of Erikson. But, as has been mentioned previously, I won't have to have my great-grandchildren read the final two books of this series at my weathered tombstone, so I have to give props to Erikson here, as opposed to the "two thumbs down" I'll be giving Martin and Donaldson posthumously. Thanks for the books, Luci! I was beginning to run out of Mensa newsletters, and now that LOST is done for the season, I'll have something to keep me from the boredom of living on an inferior planet for a few weeks longer.

Hi All,

Steven Erikson is doing an online signing with The Signed Page for the US release of House of Chains. The book will be released in late August and the signing will be sometime right after that.

Todd Lockwood, the artist who has done the last few US release covers, may also be a part of the signing. More information will be posted on the website when it comes available. :)

If you have any questions, ask me. I'm always around.

Hi guys!

Sorry about the delay. Life, as usual, founds ways to get in the way. But the second Q&A is now online!

And yes, Cameron answers the "dreaded" GRRM question. He also tells us which story arc he'll work on following the completion of RETURN OF THE CRIMSON GUARD.

Enjoy!
