I do not feel any connection to the story I began. I think I need to start over again--and write in first person. That usually helps me feel connected.

For what it's worth, (perhaps not much), my personal feeling about the writing process is similar to Khaliban's.

Of course, I stick pretty exclusively to poetry, and the emotion doesn't always have to be pain, although it often is, or is a factor at least. (Someones pain anyway.)

And my one real break from poetry, a 27,000ish word "novella" is more a long opinion piece than anything else, so even there, emotion at least figured strongly, even though it was simply my strength of feeling for those particular opinions.

That said, it is likewise a personal opinion/perception, by no means necessarily true for everybody, or anybody, or somebody.

I find it easier in first person too, but it doesn't always fit. In my novels (I have another on the go beside NaNoWriMo) I seem to semi-consciously solve this problem by switching between first and third depending on the character. Whether it works remains to be seen. I hope my muse knows what it's doing.

I have decided to write about the (fictional) murder of my exboss, you know, the one who probably SHOULD be murdered, but my morality disability just prevents me from committing a violent crime. Even though the entire world would be better off with this nasty F****R out of it.

I've written only enough words today to put me over 10000 - that's about 200 words today.
I'll probably be able to make it up over the next couple of days.

Well, you're twice as far along as I am. But, in my case, I am just happy with the doing.

Cho, would you narrate your murder story from the POV of the murderer or the victim or a third party? Or would you make it a murder mystery?

I would narrate from the point of view of a student who suspects that one of the teachers murdered the principal.

13,324 now. Still way, way behind, but getting better. I wrote over 3000 tonight, and would have kept going if I didn't have to make sure I get enough sleep to not nod off during tomorrow night's long drive.

Wrote 1700 today, so still quite a way behind after my two day break and under-quota work yesterday. 13160 (you've overtaken me, CovJr).

Add another big fat zero to my count.

I wondered what this NaNoWriMo thing was about. Now I know.

This competition sounds too stressful for me, but I wish everyone success!

i realize i haven't chk'd in here to report my progress. i haven't word counted. that's right, no word count. i'm just writing. every night but not even timing how long i write! i have freed myself (with a little help from a good friend) from the confines of parameters! heh. and people, i am writing to beat the band! having a blast! hope you all are having as good a time as i am!!

I haven't had much time this week, but hopefully I will have time for a writing session this afternoon in between paying bills this morning, and spending an evening curled up in bed with A Feast For Crows.

I am waiting for the Mountain Dew to kick in before tackling the bills. What's worse than a small mountain of bills to pay? A small mountain of bills before you are somewhat awake!

I've known all along that chances are slim to nonexistent that I could get 50,000 words done. But I am writing again -- and getting rid of some ghosts and finding some answers for my own life. And I think I have the beginning of what could be a pretty good story once I go back and do some revisions. So I am very happy that I have been participating in this.

I am not a writer - but I know some! I can't help reading this thread and thinking about the SHINING and that author's attempt at writing!!

I agree with Duchess that the process is what really matters to me, more than the outcome. However, as an astute friend of mine observed when I told her about this: "I think you'll succeed, because it'll annoy you too much if you don't".

The rapidity with which I'm writing has made my creations more insane, if anything. Whether it's good insane or bad insane remains to be seen, and I don't really have time to worry about it.

I'm trying not to analyse too much, since I hate that side of myself (the analytical side), but it's difficult to hit a goal if you don't know where the goal is or where you are in relation to it. So I worked out I need to average 4625 words per day to succeed - that's not including the days I go to visit my girlfriend. But my friend was right. Knowing myself as I do, if I get to the final night and I haven't hit 50,000 I'll probably stay up all night to do it.

I've said it before: I will not be defeated by mere quantity!

I've gone into a slump and haven't really recovered. Needing to write 2100 words a day, I find myself only capable of putting out 1500. I'll end the month woefully below target, but continue to work on the piece afterwards until it's done.
It doesn't help that I've allowed myself to become engrossed in a new book today.
