After reading through the list of actors here I am going to have to say that Hugh Laurie is the perfect Thomas Covenant. He's got just the right amount of pr*ckishness that TC has along with the passion that TC shows as well. I could believe that he was a disgruntled leper. Hell I believe that he is a disgruntled cripple in House.

Hugh Laurie would be IDEAL but he would never play another character so similar to House.

Disclaimer: I have never seen House or Hugh Laurie act

So setting him aside for the time being, I keep thinking of the following:

TC - Denzel Washington. Not sure why, but he keeps coming into my head and can't shake him.

Saltheart & Bannor - Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd. You may have seen Ray in some bad roles lately like Punisher Warzone and The Other Guys, but when I saw him in McKidd as the two Roman legionaires in the HBO series Rome, I only saw Saltheart and Bannor.

Mhoram - James McAvoy

Wish someone good could get a movie greenlighted. Don't think an animated or CGI movie like Beowulf work work, this is too much about human emotions.

Perhaps in the first chronicles, the characters are too similar, but in "the Second Chronicles" Covenant changes in many profound ways.
In TPTP Coventant wants to cry several times, but is unable to shed tears from his ingrained leper numbness.
In TWL he cries frequently and shows other signs of growth and change that I think Hugh Laurie would drool at the chance to portray.

Yeah, Hugh Laurie. Doesn't TC look just like him on TWL cover?

If Hugh Laurie can not portray Covenant, then he should at the very least study the character and recommend another actor to play him.
The personality fits, shows astounding growth, which actors all DREAM of portraying, and by Hell, Billy G.! Them Daryl Sweet illustrations do look exactly like him!
Kind of profoundly mystical, if you think about it!

I'm on my third or fourth reading of the first and second Chronicles -- it's been so long since "Fatal Revenant" came out I thought I'd refresh my memory of the whole saga before reading "Against All Things Ending" -- and picture a different Covenant every time.

This go-round I keep bouncing between Hugh Laurie (I agree with everything that's been said in favor of him on this thread) and Thomas Gibson, who plays Special Agent Hotchner on "Criminal Minds."

Some will say Gibson is too pretty to play TC, but I always pictured him as being a decent-looking guy who was cut down in the prime of life by his leprosy. If you get him to lose 25-30 pounds, I think Gibson could look the part, especially once TC grows his beard.

Plus, the flat, unsmiling affectation of the Hotchner character (just add anger) lends itself to TC. If Hotch will just say "Don't touch me" once on CM, it might just cement the deal for me.

I've read some discussion on the casting of Mhoram on this thread, too. I can't remember who I pictured in this role before, but on this reading I keep picturing the "My name Peggy" guy in the Discover Card commercials. The guy may not be able to act his way out of a paper bag and therefore end up being totally inappropriate, but to me he's got a Mhoram-like face -- kind and understanding with a hint of mischief. If not Mhoram, he could definitely play Hyrim, at least in my book.

Don't know who I'd pick to play Lena, but I've been picturing Mariska Hargitay as Atiaran on this reading, but it could be just because she's one of my TV girlfriends.

Of course, this is all academic for the time being, since the TC movie is abandoned for now. But that's kinda what makes this and similar threads fun to read. If they ever make a TC movie, I'm sure everyone we've all cast will be too old by that time and then we'll have a grand time casting new actors.

I know this is pointless, but:

Dennis Quaid.

The ending of The Last Dark:
"And so, Covenant brought the Dracs home. He fulfilled his vow, and brought Linden before the Holy Council in Revelstone. And, in the fullness of time, Linden brought her own son before the Holy Council, the name of Thomas Covenant was added to the line of Jereeba."

(thanks for the reminder, BTW, I have to finally haul off and make an arrangement with Netflix as my copy of Pandorum is now stuck in the bowels of my DVD player forever...I'm serious)

I have a friend on facebook who would make a great Covenant.

Drew Carey would be a better choice than that even.

Willem Defoe is 56, it would take at least 5 years to film the first trilogy, if they started scripting it today, and Willem Defoe would be 61 by the end of the first Trilogy, and Covenant's only 30 in the first Trilogy.

By which time computers will be able to rejuvenate any actor/actress on screen.
Did you hear Marylin Monroe is doing a new picture?
No, Defoe fits the "Gaunt" description, but has little else to recommend him.
There's only one problem with Dennis Quaid-- it's hard to dislike him. You have to hate Covenant at first in order to love him later.
Hough Laurie is BEYOND perfect.

In my mind, practical effects beat digital. I'd rather see an actor who can pull off the part for real, instead of glossing over them with CGI.

Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greatest actors ever and would nail this role if it ever came to fruition. :)
