On his first full day in office, Governor Charlie Crist signed Executive Order 07-01 directing all of Florida's state agencies to use plain language in all correspondence to ensure clear and concise communication. The order directs state of Florida agencies to review all communication and customer service methods to make sure we communicate clearly with the people we serve.
"The way that we communicate with the people we serve goes a long way toward fulfilling our responsibility to them."
- Governor Crist
"Customer service excellence is a core value in our organization and the initiative is a wonderful opportunity to further strengthen our relationship with those we serve. As public health professionals, it is essential that we partner with Florida's residents and visitors to promote and protect their health and safety. Using plain language to communicate our message can help the public better understand their role in our vital partnership."
- Ana M. Viamonte Ros, M.D., M.P.H.
State Surgeon General
The Art of Clear and Concise Communication
What is plain language?
Plain language is understood the first time you read or hear it. It is clear, concise, easy to read.
There is no defined style for plain language. It is simply speaking and writing so that all can understand!
Plain language is part of good customer service and helps readers understand documents quickly. It gets the message across in the shortest time possible. If your documents give good instructions, readers are more likely to understand them and follow them correctly.
