Congrats on the new job, HLT.

I don't like people telling me how to dress, either. (That's one reason I never tried to get an on-air job in TV....) The firm I work for instituted a sort of dress code a few years back -- no denim, no cargo pants, no t-shirts with sayings on them, etc. Quite annoying. But you know what? They never said anything about socks. I have quite the collection now.

I'm here to post my own job after being referred by Linna Heartlistener from the Fear thread. I have actually been reemployed at a nonprofit law firm in NJ that primarily gives advice but does a bit of pro bono work. I'm working as a volunteer intake paralegal - essentially, I give very little, if any, advice and stick to assessing clients for eligibility and gathering information for callbacks by our attorneys. I deal in all kinds of different issues so the calls are usually varied and, also because of the differing personalities of the callers, interesting.

It's volunteer but I enjoy it. I have actually worked here before and used to get paid $15/hour but they lost funding and have laid people off. I wasn't able to get rehired for pay after finishing at college as a result of the hiring freeze. I am looking for something else, but my parents are supporting me in the meantime. I don't think that the hiring freeze is gonna end anytime soon.

Holsety, your job sounds a lot like the internship I had at Legal Aid when I was in paralegal school. I found it to be challenging but fun. I met with one elderly man who wanted a divorce because his wife was going out dancing with one of her girlfriends. He said something like, "What else can I do?" and I said, "Go with her?" Bless his heart. I filed his request for assistance. Never did hear what happened, as the internship ended soon afterward.

At the end of January, my hubby's present job ends.

He's a pretty capable individual... theology nerd who's also a community-building strategist - there should be places who (or is it "places that"?) want him. In the mean-time, we've got good tutoring work and better prospects for tutoring if/when we choose to take advantage of 'em.

I'm frustrated in a pretty self-focused way, because it most likely means leaving churches (at least by June), possibly a big move to a different state or up to Canada. I really hate leaving a community; entering a new one scares me.

Looks like I've got something! I'll be driving about 40 minutes to tutor at a tutoring company, but it looks like they can give me 6 hrs on 1 day and 8 on Saturday. Which is great scheduling.

Then I can cover the rest of what we need with my existing private tutoring. (it works for us if I get a little more, or even - I think - if I have a little less!)

Yea, I have my perferences set to email when reply is posted in a thread I've posted in.

one drawback, if you get logged out, and you visit the thread when logged out, you won't get another notification, because it already notified you. you have to visit the thread while logged in, before it recognizes you visited and then it knows you want another notification on next reply.

I've never used that.

But when I saw you posted here, I was like..."hope Sin isn't suddenly unemployed."

I only use the notifications on the important threads like all of the Sgt. Null related spam threads in Mallorys. Need to know right away when whack a null thread needs to be seen to or when some new I HAVE A SOLUTION! item has appeared.

Well, I ended up saying no to that job... the non-compete agreement they wanted me to sign was something I did not want to accept.

(Having some second thoughts, though.)

Gotta do what's best for you, Linna. I've turned down at least one job where the terms and conditions didn't suit me.

Sorry to hear that Linna. Yea, if it's only part time, and you plan on doing it on your own through your own avenues as well, that could definitely conflict with that agreement, so, it's almost certainly the right decision

Hey all, we've got some really good news on the employment front!

I've been using a lot of the tutor-training from that place I decided not to go work for, and it's improved my confidence + I've been negotiating with parents waaaaay better.
So now I've increased my hours of my own self-employed work by ALOT!


There was a position that my hubby was really interested in applying for a few months ago… (seems ideal in a number of ways) but missed the deadline for… they CALLED him up and let him know that he can apply!

Also, Sindatur- yup, you're right. I'm now seeing this as best and really encouraged.

Quick question on an employment related issue...

I was filling out one more online app, and got to the section on veteran's status. Because they were all mandatory (I am used to just putting "not a veteran" and not having to answer additional questions) I got to the section on "military era served." I was surprised to see that, while the Vietnam, Korean, WWII and Gulf Wars were listed, neither the Iraq nor Afghanistan wars were as a separate era. Is it typical for them to be grouped with the gulf war era in this context?

Yes, because it's about having a national defense medal which is all based on when you were in the military, not necessarily what you did, and since the first Gulf War, it's been pretty hard to serve without being awarded one.

For instance, I have a national defense medal for the first gulf war (and a bronze star on the ribbon for the second). I didn't enlist until October '95. *shrug* Guys who enlisted a couple weeks after me didn't get one. It's feasible that someone could have served from Nov. '99 to sometime before 9/11, but all enlistment contracts are six years (including obligated inactive service). But then, they'd just not claim wartime status. So even though I was never anywhere near a war for my first enlistment, I could still claim veterans' preference, even if I hadn't also served from '02-'06.
