Dunno if I would call him either sick or loathsome (except, of course, for his physical sickness, though I know that's not the "sick" you meant)...I know there's the whole rape thing *grimace*, but the state of mind he was in, I think he would have pleaded insanity (if he had pleaded at all...he was still in a state of unacceptance at that point...)
Really, I don't think I would like him at all, were I to meet the Covenant of the First Chronicles. But to think of him as Joan knew him before, and then as Linden knew him and fell in love with him (perhaps especially then)....*swoon*
on a bit of a sidenote...
I was reading an interview Mr. Donaldson did for W.A. Senior (who did a commentary on the Chronicles called "Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (Variations on the Fantasy Tradition)" ), and he basically said that while writing the first Chronicles, it was a bit of a task to remember to make Covenant likeable, because to him, Covenant's likeability was so obvious.
Anyway, basically what I'm trying to say is that he's likeable - in fact, very much so -- but you gotta do a little digging to find the likeability for the first while. *grin*

Once I understood Covenant, it was a lot easier to like him. That didn't happen until, I think, the Power That Preserves, or thereabouts. Going back to Lord Foul's Bane now, I like Covenant because I know him, but the first time round I detested him and wondered how any author could manage to craft such a loathesome "hero". Donaldson may have found Covenant's likeability obvious because he had a headstart. He already knew Covenant inside out, because he created him, piece by piece.
Anyway, I'd better get out of this "ladies only" topic

Yes, I agree with you on every point, there...it was probably so obvious to him, in fact, that he felt it would be insulting his reader's intelligence to sit there and explain why he's so likeable....I think he might have even said something like that (don't have my book on hand...I'll have to look that up again to get an exact quote).

The Haruchai were the best! Strong, dark, handsome. The only one I didn't particularly like was Brinn.

Yes...Bannor and Cail were my two favorites...though Cail more than Bannor. Even though he was as steadfast as a Bloodguard, he was, I think, a little more human...even if just a very little *grin*

Er...was it the same thing Scottish Highlanders and Islanders wear under their kilts???
That would be themselves, for the Sassenachs among us!

I don't think there is one Darth. There aren't really that many women to choose from anyhow.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Creator yet. I mean, admittedly he's ancient, wears an ugly robe, has appalling personal hygiene not to mention heart trouble, but come on! He's THE CREATOR! He made the Arch of Time! Plus, you gotta respect a guy who's so into free will & all that...you'd always have your space....
