As for Narcissa, I'm pretty sure she aparates to Snape's home so she can't be a squib.
She's no squib.

Narcissa is NOT a squib. I highly doubt Dudley is going to perform magic. I also highly doubt Vernon. I think the most likely will be Arabella Figg. I have nothing to base this on except instinct. The only other candidate I think of is Piers Polkiss and the only reason I say that is that he is Dudley's best friend and mentioned alot and JKR likes to throw a "shocker" in there every once in a while. Here you go Guns darling, have at!

Figg and Polkiss and good candidates, my sweet. I think the only reason Petunia is a hot candidate is because of JKR's comments not so long ago...but I don't buy it.

Although i have imagined a scenario, where LV goes to the Dursley's looking for HP, and Petunia saves Dudley a la Lily ..which could do god knows what. Feh.

Me lov-ee the potter!

I honestly didn't seriously consider the fact that Narcissa could be a Squib, I just didn't think we had seen her actually performing magic, and thought it would be hillarious to see her revealed as a Squib.

I suppose it could also be the parent of someone we thought was Muggleborn, such as Hermione's dentists or wouldn't it be fun to have it be the Muggle PM, LOL.

I do think Arabella would be the most likely of those we know, though.

I think it would be interesting if Filch finally discovers magic. Hopefully, he would turn it on Peeves...

Guns, darling, JKR has officially stated that Petunia is NOT going to be the one to perform magic late in life. Sorry.

Yeah I know... though in fairness, my suggestion doesn't require that PETUNIA wind up with magic abilities...only that she defends her own "dudders" or whatever she call him. A Mother's love and all of that. Jes thinkin' out loud.

You'd thinbk that if Dudley had any game, it'd come out when he was set upon by Dementors.

I do love the potter!

That is precisely why I ruled out Dudley as the late bloomer.

Doesn't she apparate to the village where Snape lives?

The last several books (I don't recall when this started) have all been released on a Friday. While those rumors certainly seem to carry some weight, it would seem odd to change an established pattern.

I think Friday ahs been selected to encourage the midnight parties and releases. Be a shame to see those be threatened!

Yes, I believe there is some mention of her apparating at some point (Either a reference that she could apparate to Durmstrang, if Draco attended there, or maybe apparating to Snape's) which I had forgotten.

July 7 still would work, however, as part of the reason for the Friday release, is so kids can spend the weekend reading, and not miss school (or work for those of us kids who are older than school age). I actually hadn't considered the Book releases were Midnight after Friday night, as I pre-order from Amazon, and mine arrives Saturday morning by about 10am.

Narcissa apparates in HBP.

I am doubting a July 7 release simply because the movie release is the following weekend. July 31st seems more reasonable if it's even going to be released in July. I just checked her website and there haven't been any new updates since she posted that she was struggling with writing some scenes so it's not even finished yet. When she does finish it, things like editing and rewrites still have to be done and final publishing acceptance has to occur. Then it has to go to the printers, get typeset etc. I think a July release might be pushing it.

I had always believed it unlikely that they would be released so close together, but, I have been convinced otherwise recently. Previously, I always figured at least a 4 month gap between a new movie release, and a new book release. As long as we hear by end of February, it would still fall in line with previous books release dates compared to our knowledge of status. If Feb comes and goes, with no announcement, then history tells us it won't be ready by July.

Well, look at it this way, we already know that Fatal Revenant has an official release date of October of this year. We also know that SRD is finished with the third draft and it's been submitted to the publishers. JKR isn't even finished with the first draft yet. I have alot of trouble believing that she's gonna finish the book, finish the rewrites and submit it to the publishers have it accepted etc. in time for a July release.

Certainly you have a point, if we knew what stage she was in, however, we never know what stage she is in, except "not finished" and "ready to go to the printing house". She has never told us things like "first go 'round with editing" or "My editor, just kicked it back for a final revision" or anything of that nature. To the best of my recollection, it's always "not finished", until they announce 4-5 months away is the "street date" and the Publishing details. Does anyone recollect anything different?

Sindatur, you could very well be right. I honestly didn't start reading the Potter books until OOTP was already out so I have only waited for HBP and this final one. I hope I hope I really really really hope you are 100% right. I have only my personal experience with waiting for SRD to go by. ;)

Guns, I am not a pessimist, merely a realist. :|

On the plus side, I'm happy to hear an official date (or at least month) has been set for FR.

I started reading HP right after GoF came out, so I had to wait for both OotP (The first book not released every year) and HBP, and now of course, having to wait (I hesitate to use the word) patiently for Deathly Hallows.
