thanks thelma!
its part of my Monet series, patterned after Richard Brautigans's
The Galilee Hitchhiker series in which Baudelaire is the central
character.
here is another from that series.
Monet and I at Argenteuil
And here is the last page, Monet.
I see Camille and the boy, coming up,
over the soft rise of the hill,
she has her dress gathered in her hand,
he has a long-stemmed weed in his mouth.
She stops and the boy just behind her.
They stare, imperceptibly, at the fouth wall.
What is out there, Monet?
Is it you with a brush in your hand,
gesturing irascibly with your pallette,
for them to be still?
Is it me, standing, just past you,
on the banks of the Seine,
outside the window of the canvas,
trying to record my impressions with my pen?
I’ll tell you what I have learned, Monet.
We cannot make the wind stop moving.
We cannot freeze the world in tableau
simply for our own needs.
Have the operation, my friend,
remove the cataracts from your eyes.
In your desire to paint what you see,
you, yourself, create motion and light.
Camille’s chest is heaving with exertion
as she lets down her dress,
your son is laughing at your frustrated flapping.
They are alive, Monet,
and they are walking toward us.
