Lovely photos, lorin! I particularly like the shot of the sailboat. Postcard-worthy!

Re: aperture priority - sorry, Waddley, I should've provided a pic. It's "Av" on the camera's mode dial:

The aperture broadly determines how much of a scene is in focus. The wider the aperture (the lower the f-number or "f-stop"), the more you can create that "sharp-foreground, soft-background" look, as in macro shots.

Btw, "bokeh" is the term pros use to describe the pleasing out-of-focus element in a picture.

I am lucky to live at the entrance to Fort Hancock, New Jersey. It is really an amazing place. It emcompasses an old empty and well preserved fort used at the turn of the century and WW1. It is just such an interesting place to explore. And within the Fort is are federal beaches, the Audobon Society, a Marine college, the Coast Guard and many many wildlife preserves. And it overlooks nyc. I spend the winters exploring the area. I just love it and its the main reason I live in NJ. (the only reason, actually). I just wanted to share a few pics.

I used a telephoto lens zoomed out to 270mm (35mm equivalent). Then I cropped the picture so that the owl filled the frame.

Oh, and lorin, please feel free to post more pics. Being stuck where I am, it's always nice to see other places through Watchers' cameras.

Nah, haven't seen it. I did see a Maddin film back in the 90's called Careful. Weird but interesting.

earlier, my friend whitley took a picture of me... i'd climbed a wall and gotten into the yard of one of the historic houses here in Washington... there's a really old fence there, and, well...

remember Wilson from Home Improvement? aside from the showing of the nose and mouth, and the fact that i was encouraging whitley to climb the wall too, rather than dispensing wise and non-trespassory advice... pretty similar, akshully...
