Well, in that spirit of "being all responsible," we're getting the kids on a new (earlier) sleep schedule this weekend... in anticipation of school starting in a few weeks!
Cags, I thoroughly enjoyed your earlier discussion of, "I am looking forward to boring mundane tasks to fix my new house... what is happening to me?"
Also, this weekend, I get to tutor a dude in a math/computer science subject I haven't done since college. (until this past week of reviewing, that is!) It's a fun subject and I'm jazzed.

"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor

Last weekend I spent both days in the Heritage Tent behind a bookstall at the Heckington Agricultural Show. This weekend I have to write my half yearly newsletter as the two following weekends are chock a block and it's due out in August! No peace for the wicked.

I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Visited Mom of the Dawn (i.e., my mother) with Fawn (my daughter) Fri-Sat, then drove down to S. Jersey to pick up my son who had been at a wedding in VA... arrived at my sister's in N. Jersey about midnight.
Went to church this morning and met a bunch of Nigerians who were so happy to speak some Hausa, discovered we had a mutual friend in Jos, got invited to stay at their house any time (and they actually mean it).
My sister is making pizza for lunch and it's a gorgeous day. Driving back home today, reuniting with Stag (i.e., my husband) who was in the Bronx all weekend giving away free BBQ as a church outreach.
Iz gud day.

Off to the Ren Faire! With Dam-sel's help, I've put together an outfit, although it is far from authentic. Perhaps SD will sneakily snap a candid shot of me in it today, as I hate posing. Just hope it's a head-on shot. so y'all can see my torque bought at the faire last year.

when I was brand new at running a shelter I got the brilliant idea to take the shelter kids to the Ren Faire. So picture it... four staff and I took 35 6 - 14 years olds drove 3 hours to attend something called a "faire". A place with no rides, no arcade games, no water park, where people walk around in 'whack' costumes, where there was no money to buy the turkey legs, where the kids carried their city supplied bagged lunch. Where they couldn't get through the crowd to see the jousting. So I had charge of 8 miserable inner city kids on on a day that was at least 90 degrees. We walked by this one tent. It was a turtle race. People were putting down dollars bills betting on the turtles. All of a sudden I hear some man shouting at 'my ' kids and I realize Adam, a 9 year old hyperactive little brat (and future foster kid of mine) and a few cohorts had robbed the dollar bills off the betting circle. So picture me with all 8 kids lined up against the wall and me patting them down for stolen bills.Menolly wrote:Off to the Ren Faire! Valuable lessons learned that day.
Never take a bunch of inner city shelter kids to an event they cannot pronounce.
Never go on a trip more than one hour from the shelter.
and actually the biggest lesson I learned.........
send staff and stay home

some day I'll tell you about the Great Apple Picking fiasco.

Lol, lorin. I like the last one best.
I took 10 Kindergartners once on a field trip to the palace of the King of the Berom tribe. We were told they would be riding horses, and other fun stuff. One of my students was his granddaughter and it happened to be his birthday. So after a tour of the magisterial palace and throne room (baw---ring), and the residential grounds (what 5-year-old doesn't just adore a guided tour) and a chance to PET the horses (and most Nigerian kids never get close to a horse so only the Irish kid would pet them) we were shepherded to an outdoor receiving area where TV crews photographed the King receiving a birthday card the class had made for him and I was interviewed (and had to make up some gracious remarks on the spot) and after an interminable time with bigwigs and nabobs wishing him happy 70th birthday, the kids were led away and well-fed (which goes a long way for 5 year olds). Still, I felt very much suckered-in to what turned out to be a photo op.
This weekend: Piscataway. Many of our weekends will be occupied with us traveling to churches that support our mission work, and give our dog-and-pony show where Stag preaches and I sing. But it's usually fun meeting people.
EDIT: It was fun, but literally 6 hours of talking Sat pm and 7 hours of solid talking (except during the actual church service) Sunday left me drained. All I wanted all weekend as we raced by endless acres of sunlit woods was to lie in some grass and look up through leaves at clouds going by.
I got my wish a few minutes ago.
