as to toilet training, my folks say they showed me once and that was it. once i realized the privacy the bathroom afforded i was all for it.

Wondering a lot of things lately. When the right time is to move out of my parents' house. How to make better use of my blog (and if it matters, since I have no readers). Whether I'm getting enough value out of my World of Warcraft subscription, and if I'd be better off with an EU account (and if it would be worth paying £40, losing my progress, and losing contact with the people I play with to switch).

1. Once you have several thousand saved up.
2. If nobody is reading your blog, then it is a journal. Write for the hell of it, or be an attention whore and direct people to your site. But it's gotta be snappy to keep people's attention, as there is a lot of competition out there.
3. I hear Rift is sucking in a lot of WOW fans. Or better yet, save your money and get out of your parents' house.

I have about £15k savings, actually. I have a feeling a desposit and fees on buying a house or flat would eat up most of that, which is why I'm hesitant (I'd have to have enough for furniture and all the other stuff, on top, after all). I've been considering going for it once I have 20k (maybe the end of the year/early next year?).

Generally a 20% down payment is the minimum you want (there are ways of getting loans to cover 90% or, in some cases 100%, but you're putting yourself at more risk of market fluctuations when you do that).

Then, there's the income matter. The absolute limit of what you want to pay is 25% of your gross income for housing. Realistically, though, if this is your first purchase, you should be targeting 20% of your net, though it's very unlikely you'll get something that low. However, you'll appreciate the extra breathing room in your budget if you do. There are a lot of expenses in a new place that you won't be expecting.

To get an idea of what that could afford you, there are a variety of loan calculators on the Internet. My bank offers one here. I don't know about interest rates in your area, but around here one would expect 5% - 8% depending on credit (banks like to offer 4%, but in reality they reserve that rate for an extremely small number of clients, and everyone else gets higher rates).

Don't you also need Private Mortgage Insurance with less than %20?

I'm loopy and goofy today-had minor knee surgery yesterday so hobbling around hard and on lot's of pain meds. Surgery was no big deal just had to have something nasty scraped off my kneecap-in any case it will make life much easier for me in the long run. Of course now that I am completely goofy I have to figure out a complex plan of action of who, when and how I'm going to get out to New York for my Dad's 90th birthday on the 30th-have the figure out my sister's schedule, arrange something with east coast Watchers (so I can spend the a day with y'all) and plan exactly when to buy my ticket and what day to fly out--and it all has to be done today before prices change. All this before I have to lie down and pass out :P :P :P

Whew-I'm dizzy...all the above post a are very interesting and silly and I'd love to respond, just too blotto to figure out what everybody is saying, right away... :faint:

Glad the surgery was minor. I'm not a fan of being loopy when I've got important things to figure out so you have my sympathy there.
Shame I won't be meeting you. I have only met a small handful of Watchers and believe it or not, danlo, you'd be one the first on my list if I ever get out of Florida.

Hang in there bub.

Dunno what the mortgage rules would be in the UK. You could talk to a banker or a realtor, Murrin. (But if you go the realtor route, brace yourself to be pestered to death thereafter.)

"Realtor" is just some strange American way of saying "estate agent", right?
