Jenn, I couldn't find an explanation for Percy taking the points in the Lexicon, I know I recall this beig addressed by JKR, though, so someone with more skills tracking down her interview quotes, should be able to turn something up.

I did find this though:

www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/inquisitorial_squad.html

They were given the authority to open and inspect packages, tell on people to Umbridge, and do other such dirty work for her. The members of the Inquisitorial Squad participated in the raid on the DA's meeting and captured a number of DA members, including Harry. Members of the IS were a small silver letter I on their robes. Although Prefects are not normally allowed to take points away from fellow prefects, members of the IS could and did.
(Note: It says Prefects aren't allowed to take points from fellow Prefects, it doesn't say from fellow students, maybe that's the catch?)

Sin, thanks, I think it's sort of a loophole but a weak one at best. Ernie, who is a prefect states boldly that only teachers can dock points and Malfoy does not contradict it and even reinforces that a few sentences later.

Guns, Usiv, I TOLD you guys I was a compete DORKUS AMORKUS! I would much prefer to read than watch tv. I have four huge bookshelves in my bedroom full of my favorite books and stacks of recently read ones on the floor waiting to go back to my favorite bookstore. To be fair, there is other stuff on the bookshelves but it only reinforces my dorkus amorkus standing because the other stuff is my lunchbox collection and a few miscellaneous figurines that people have given me and my lovely stuffed jawa.

OH SIN! I didn't mean that to reflect upon YOU. It was directed at JKR. If that's her explanation it's weak. I think she just made a consistency mistake. To YOU I give kudos for finding anything at all that could be an explanation.

LOL, yea, I realize that, I was just having a go at ya.

The Lexicon, actually isn't a JKR site, it's a collection of facts and figures from a fan site, to help explain these kinds of things, based upon interview clarifications or other methods (such as sometimes book passages being misinterpretted or corrections made later on). And just a reference guide for particular things. It's like a Fansite HP encyclopedia

Is that the actual cover art? Just a black sleeve with writing? Or is that just to give us something to picture?

I don't know. Good question. If it is the actual cover it suggests somethin' pretty dark.

I'll say this. I am approaching this book very warily. The DT series was ended and it was SAD...f'n sad. I won't reveal anything, but I fear that this is going to be the same sort of affair.

Snape is a goner. Why? If for no other reason that the fact I like him. My faves always get roasted.

Other than that? Who knows? I think JKR has spared Harry. I also think Ron and Hermione will survive.

Hagrid? A goner. Too prone to pie-eyed faith. His 1/2 bother will exact the revenge.

Death Eaters and Voldy. Dead.

Lupin and Tonks? Dead.

Me? Weeping.

I don't know about the bloodbath. I certainly hopenot. I kinda think it's gonna be a final showdown between Harry and Voldemort with onlookers Peter Pettigrew, Hermione and Ron.

I just hope it is not Harry who kills Snape (in error).

How much time do you think will have had passed between end of 6 and beginning of 7y ..AND will there be a last trip to Privet?

Harry will return to Privet Drive at the end of Book 6, to "recharge" his protections, and Book 7 will pick up within a week of end of School year 6. Book 6 ended with the impression we wouldn't be attending Hogwarts in Book 7, I'm thinking something needs to happen that forces them to return to at least start school in their 7th year.

I'm thinking, at least one Weasley dies, there's just too many of them, too directly involved for them all to survive. If Ron dies, there will also be another Weasley dying. If it happens fairly early, I'm thinking one of the twins, everyone has always wondered how JKR would tear our hearts out with the surviving one mourning. If it doesn't happen early, the twins are probably safe, because I think JKR will indeed want to explore that drama.

Pettigrew will prove his Gryffindor-ness and sacrifice himself for Harry at the most convenient moment.

Neville, Luna, Ginny, Ron, Hermione - I'm afraid at least one will bite the bust.

Bellatrix will likely die.

I think Lupin will survive, he's the last of the Marauders, if Pettigrew dies. JKR only wanted to scare us with the whole metal arm, and picking up the metal goblet, maybe she'll scare us a little more, but, Lupin won't die from the experience. It would be kinda neat if he was cured in the process.
