macht = machen = to make (can also mean "to do")
Frei = free (during WWII, Nazi concentration camps had signs at the entrance that read "Arbeit macht Frei" literally, "work makes free")

I think I got it off a website somewhere. The "Arbeit macht Frei" I got from the book "Elli", which is excellent. It is about the Holocaust.
