Yea Av! The Inverted World is one of my all time favs!

Gene Wolfe's Latro in the Mist (the amnesia as a plot device was too interesting a concept to resist) and Roger Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber (I heard people talking about this one one too many times, when the girl in front of me started telling her boyfriend how great it was - time to finally see what all the fuss is about).

Oh, and while I'm here, my mother has ordered some from amazon as an extra birthday present: Secret Life and Veniss Underground by Jeff VanderMeer, and Looking for Jake by China Mieville, all of which will arrive at the end of next week.

With my birthday trip to Barnes & Noble I got Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman, The Princess of Roumania by Paul Park, the second and third books in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, and Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan (I wouldn't have touched the last one, except that I keep hearing over at the Martin board that RJ is getting back on track with this one ). Also a couple of general novels, a history book, and some mysteries.

I had been thinking of getting more Neil Gaiman, because Borders had his old books on three for two - but when I got there I found they'd sold out all but two of his books.

The Princess of Roumania by Paul Park,

That was an exceptionaly delightful read Duchess. Very impressed with what look to be the first book in a four book sequence. I hope it expands upon the critical raves it's receiving and get attention from traditional genre fans as this is a book they will like. Not as ambitiuous as some of the top reads this year - but damn good nevertheless, and executed flawlessly by a real quality author.

Yay, another person reading LATRO. I think the first one, SOLDIER IN THE MIST, is absolutely wonderful.

I was attracted to both authors by their short stories that SRD included in STRANGE DREAMS. Kress's "With the Original Cast" was my Favorite Short Story of 2002, and Bear's DINOSAUR SUMMER will almost certainly be my Favorite Adventure of 2005.

Oh, thank you. I hadn't gotten beyond looking at the author/title yet. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at all the new books, considering how little reading time I have.

Went down to the depot to pick up the Amazon order today (noone was in when they tried to deliver). Veniss Underground in a nice paperback, and includes the short story "Balzac's War" (unneeded, however, since the same story is also included in the other VanderMeer book I received); Mieville's short story collection Looking for Jake; and Secret Life, which it turns out is a hardbound first edition from Golden Gryphon Press (though this might not be as surprising as it seemed, because I have no idea how many editions there have been anyway).

Taking this absolutely serious for once: these are the last I'll buy until my to read pile is empty (or until The Bonehunters and The Thousandfold Thought come out, at least. Damn.)
My current backlog in no particular order: Harrison x2, Zelazny, Eddison, Wells, Banks, Mieville x2, VanderMeer x2, Gaiman x2, Parker, Wolfe, and Duncan. And this for someone who a year ago only bought a new book after finishing his current read.

Oh, how I understand that feeling...other than the new ones by Martin and Pierce I think I'll be on hold when it comes to new aquisitions for awhile until I can find a chance to read some of my backlog...

I picked up Michael Crichton's STATE OF FEAR at the grocery store just now.

Good read.

I know this isn't scifi/fantasy, but I couldn't find a purchases topic in Gen Lit. I popped into the SU market today and got The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and Nineteen Eighty-Four second-hand for £2 each.
And yes, I'm aware that I broke my promise of not buying any more until I'd read the ones I have.

Murrin, feel free to add a General Acquisitions in the Gen Lit forum. It would be a good one to have.
