We're coming upon the end of an era as far as good network TV is concerned. For good TV, we'll be forced to the basic cable network channels (SciFi with BSG, A&E with Mad Men) and pay channels like HBO and ShowTime.

Just look at what NBC is doing with Jay Leno.

I can't think of one example in which one of the major networks picked up a show that another had aired and canceled. UPN did pick up Buffy from the WB, but those 2 have since merged, and Buffy had 5 seasons and a steady fan base behind it.
Scrubs was a show that moved over to another network after being cancelled on one. I haven't been watching it the last few seasons, so I can't speak much on it. And Fox cancelled Family Guy and brought it back. Sadly, I thought it was a better show before it was brought back.

You may be right. Lost has one more season. But only two episodes in, I have strong hope for Glee that it will fill that spot in my heart that Arrested Development used to.

The whole last season seemed to be wrapping up the series. Zach Braff and Judy Reyes (J.D. and Carla) have quit the show, and perhaps Sarah Chalke is leaving as well. I'm not sure what next season will look like, but it sure won;t be the same.

I thought Serenity was pretty much the pilot or predecessor to Firefly, I have both on dvd and its too bad they only made the one season of Firefly. I need to watch Firefly, I watched a couple episodes and liked it, cant get the wife into it though..so i gotta finish it myself.. I really liked Serenity too.... good shows and now that i have an upconversion HDMI DVD player it makes them much better quality on my HD TV.

Sorry to hear your wife isn't enjoying the series, Blackhawk.

I feel almost the complete opposite: I love Firefly to death, but Serenity leaves me cold now.

The Pilot episode of Firefly (Which I think was actually shown last), I believe was called Serenity. However, when Firefly was cancelled after 13 episodes, Joss Whedon was able to write an ending to the Series in a motion picture, which was also called Serenity.

I've just revisited them both. They both rock. I also must say that Gina Torres has the most smoking hot body. Why the hell is she not landing roles left and right? If I had to choose a celebrity body to don instead of my own I would totally chose hers.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Whenever I think of Gina Torres, I think of Wash's description of her in Bushwacked -- "... that part where her back and legs meet ... that whole area ..." ;)

I don't understand how she doesn't get more work either.

Well, she's a head reptilian alien in the reboot of "V"... and she's pretty good at it 8)

I believe you're refrring to Morena Baccarain (Inara the "Professional" woman on Firefly). Gina Torres, (Wash's wife on Firefly) I haven't seen on "V" yet.

LOL  No problem. I've made many faux pas of that very kind myself.

Enora is pretty but Zoe aka Gina Torres is not just a smoking hot body, she's gorgeous in face too. If I were to pick a female celebrity to have an experimental lesbian affair with I would pick either her or Liv Tyler. I just finished my re-watch last night and I must say WAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! I want MORE FIREFLY!!!! Damn you FOX! Damn you to hell and back! You so totally suck crocodile butt for canceling that series you rat bastards!

Over the last couple of weeks, I've taken the time to watch Firefly on Netflix. OK, so maybe my original disdain for the show was largely based on it coming on during Farscape's slot, but... Well, it's a decent show, but it's only barely sci-fi. The technological elements are barely explained, if it all; often seem inconsistent with the timeline and other extant technology; and are never really used at all to externalize the internal, with the possible exception of River's condition. It's a western set in space (duh), but for no other reason than the concept of it. In fact, the only reason I can see for doing it that way is to avoid problems with historical accuracy.

Essentially, while the writing and acting make it a good show, it's not really good sci-fi.

It's funny, though. Before I watched the series, I thought Serenity was a pretty good movie. Watching it after I finished the series, I thought it kind of sucked.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I saw Serenity first and then watched the whole Firefly series.

And I liked Serenity more before I watched Firefly than I did after. The characters were harsher, I thought, and not as well developed in Serenity.

But I have to say River was totally awesome toward the end there.
Spoiler
And I'm still upset about the characters who were killed off.
