Was a time when all my books came second hand, because books are damn expensive here and I couldn't afford them new.

I hope that some relief comes soon for those in the California fires. They can be a terrifying thing.
Fingers crossed the wind stops and the rains come.

Unfortunately, it'll be at least a couple of months before we have much chance of rain. Seems to be the new normal. Not good.

Thanks. Not in much danger personally, but I know people who are in higher-risk areas, and it's pretty scary.

Boris Johnson's insensitive comments on burka/niquab wearing women looking like "pillar boxes and bank robbers" do not as has been complained, fuel violence against Muslim women and Nadine Dorries statement in support of Johnson, that there is no place in our society for the forcing of women to wear full covering, while true are an irrelevance. On the latter, Boris actually said "...it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes" (my italics) - there was no suggestion of force in the comment, which is a different issue all together. On the first, any individual predisposed to commit violence against Muslim women is already so far beyond the pale that Johnson's comments will not add further justification for them to commit acts or behave in a manner that they have already long squared themselves with.
It has been suggested that the comments (made in Johnson's weekly Telegraph column) were a crafty move in positioning himself ready for a new leadership bid by courting the favour of the Tory right (basically the Tory Party - it's the same thing in essence), but I think that this is mistaken. I think it is simply further evidence (and we have seen plenty in the past) that Johnson simply does not have what it takes to occupy the positions of responsibility and authority he aspires to and is little more than a mealy mouthed spoiled kid who has risen above his abilities and who doesn't know when to 'can it'.
Rowan Atkinson has entered the fray, writting to The Times to say that he does not believe that an apology from Johnson is necessary on the grounds that religion is a vaid subject or 'comedy' to ridicule. Would he say the same I wonder had the black circular caps or ringlets of side hair of orthodox Jews or the extended veils of Benedictine nuns? Besides - Johnson was poking his comments at the people, not at the religion - and they weren't made in fun!

While making a nectarine crumble this evening I noticed that small coin-sized peels when reversed and stuck to the back of the hand look very much like supurating leprosy sores. The yellow meat of the fruit has a disgusting oozing pus look to it as well -
for any movie special effects technicians out there ...
So as not to offend Mellony's Quorn chicken recipe in the Galley I thought this should best be posted here.

Heya Pete, I hope you are on top of that stuff and well.
The Rabbitohs got beat on the weekend, but it is not all doom and gloom. The eldest sons birthday meant a veritable Chinese feast down in Chinatown last noght, followed up by a purpose baked german monstrosity cake back at home with his usual suspect friends. I love putting the candles in the cake..... and singing the song!

Definitely an upside
And make the most of the time off .. Im wondering how much stress plays a role in your health issues. Time off might be the very best thing for you to boot. Well that IS the point of sick leave

now that I think about it
Today has been a huge day here in my neck of the woods. We took in a highly anxious mutt for the day .. and she bolted. Ugh .. the last thing you ever want happening. So I took off in hot pursuit after her, Trev went back to get the car .. cos chronic asthmatic and not a runner.
We live in the middle of the bush .. open land for as far as the eye can see. And the owner said .. she is very obedient and will come to a whistle or calling her name. Really????

She did neither

.. She gave me a run for my money .. literally .. but I caught her, safe and sound and carried her home. A cute little Puli ..
We mentioned the not responding to a whistle or her name .. and she said .. well shes deaf.

rrriiiigggghhhhtttt
Then the rest of the afternoon, after the Puli left, we finished off the roof to our greenhouse. Its done. Tomorrow it will be setting up and planting seedlings. Very excited. Well I do have some painting to do .. but it wont affect its function.
