I have a horrible confession to make-I hate disco, I really do with a serious passion-in fact I was VP of the Philly chapt of the Disco Sucks fanclub when I lived in Jersey in 74-78. At least eight of us went to a bunch of ROCK concerts together wearing or Disco Sucks t-shirts. But once I turned 46 I started to like Saturday Night Fever and now I'll sit an watch at least 20 minutes of it whenever it's on TV.

I despise most disco danlo.

...but I've always liked Santa Esmerelda's covers of both House of the Rising Sun and (Please) Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood...

my wife got me into country, big band, swing, bluegrass (by accident, she isn't a huge fan).

i got her into a lot of left of the dial rock and floyd.

I used to REALLY hate metal, and especially Pantera. But recently I actually bought a Pantera album just for Mouth of War. (The rest of the album is about as dissapointing as Rust in Peace was but meh)

Music has gotten so bad these days that I have decided I love bands I used to hate:
the Beatles.
I loved them from a young age, then decided it was moronic and simple to love them, then finally decided that by today's standards they were GODS!!!!!!

While I love the Beatles, for some reason I really, really hate John Lennon's song "imagine." I don't know if its the repetitive circus clown piano, the marxist/athiest lyrics, or the fact that I'm contrary and love to hate things everyone loves, but I STILL have no appreciation for this song. Give it a few years. Forgive.
Sonic Youth.
I used to hate them. No stage presence. How much practice does it take to make music like that? But no. Compared to the crap that is played nowadays, I realize how valuable ANYONE doing something creative is.
Okay. Now its your turn. Who have you re-evaluated?

I sort of feel the same way about Sonic Youth I saw them and The Alarm open for The Pretenders (original guitarist). Some of their stuff has grown on me-Neil Young digs them so they can't be all bad...I will never, however, change my mind about The Alarm, say it with me: worst...band...ever!

the Pixies:
I loved them when they first came out. Then I went to see them live and they had no stage presence. They put no effort into their performance, and it sucked so bad that I spent years hating them and not ever listening to their music.
But when I decided to listen to their music again a few years ago I realized my attitude was absurd-- bottom line is they made awesome recordings and I was fool to be so snotty.
Sonic Youth:
I used to hate them and view them as a bunch of useless pretentious dilettantes. Thurston Moore came to see SUCKDOG when we were in New York and I walked right past him like he wasn't there. But you know, music sucks so bad these days, that it dawned on me that maybe I should give them another listen. Guess what? I like them now.
The Beatles:
Part of my pretensions as a punk rocker used to be hating everything the mainstream holds dear. My favorite meatmen song is "One Down Three to Go" about John Lennon getting shot.
Again, music sucks so bad these days... you know the rest. I like the Beatles a lot now.

When I was in high school, my mother found Gord's Gold on CD and listened to it constantly. Drove me crazy. A couple years later while cleaning tables at McDonalds', I found myself singing along to "Carefree Highway"... and, well, I kinda slipped away on it. A few years later I heard Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald for the first time, and I was hooked.

You know I'm grooving on Morrissey right now and I recall that I used to hate him!
My friend ray tried to change my opinion with some gentle prodding, and it finally sunk in!

Slayer. I used to hate speed metal, but I've really learned to appreciate Slayer, Testament, and their ilk.

Iron Maiden. I Can't say I ever hated them, more like I completely ignored them. But I'm paying attention to them now, and I have to say they're very impressive.

Interesting. Did you hear anything in particular that changed your mind? Just curious.

Maiden's an odd band. I was a fan back in the '80s, though not a huge one (I was more of a Judas Priest fan). I stopped listening to them right around Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

Around 5 years ago I saw Priest live. They were good (hell, they were great), but the songs didn't really stand up well. I've gotten to the point that I really can't listen to them any more.

Ironically, right around the same time, I heard The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg by Maiden and was blown away. Seen 'em since then, and they're better now than they were back then. What's more, the new songs are better too.

Brave New World is a f-'n amazing album.

Hip-hop. I used to loathe any form of hip-hop with a passion. I still hate most the hip-hop artists I hated back then- 50 Cent et al- but have discovered I love a lot of the less publicised stuff.

There was a time when it was hard to find any hip hop that sucked. Now you really have to dig deep to find gold. I'm sure it's still there, I just don't care to go looking for it. Other genres are more captivating for me.

In the reverse category, in my mid-teens I used to have a teen stereotypical anarchic love of the Dead Kennedys - any band with a lead singer named Jello Biafra was good enough for me. Actually it's not quite the reverse catergory - heard California Uber Alles the other day on the radio and it made me smile fondly... probably at my own naivity.

I was lucky being 15 and living in London at the time of the punk explosion... a very interesting time, musically speaking. Though I'd like to think my musical tastes have matured in some way 30+ years later, I still happily play various tracks by The Ruts in the car, but those alongside NWA, The Psychedelic Furs (strongly recommended), The Cramps (equally recommended - Human Fly... what a track! Gotta love psychobilly...), Floyd, AC/DC, Muse and God knows what else. My only proud legacy? My 16 year old daughter is definitely more of a rock chick than a pretzel pop princess, which she would have been if she'd taken more after her mother's musical leanings.

I think that's part of it. Other factors are:

1) Me being a mod here has made me more inclined to listen to music I used to ignore.

2) My son's getting into them.

3) I watched a recent Maiden dvd with a drummer I used to gig with, and I have a dvd with their performance on that Abbey Road show.

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg is amazing. Their album Dance of Death is what solidified me as an Iron Maiden fan. I had just been introduced through Seventh Son and had listened to Powerslave, Number of the Beast, and Somewhere in Time. Around that time, DoD came out and blew me away. With some exceptions (No Prayer for the Dying, Killers, anything with Blaze Bayley in it) I like most of their stuff, but like Cail said, from Brave New World on is their best stuff.
