Marvin, tell me a snippet about Carrion Comfort. I read horror, sci fi and fantasy exclusively; nothing else makes my brain "work." I have a whole collection of vampire books, including Stoker's original Dracula novel. My favorite of all time so far is Jeanne Kalogridis's trilogy "Diaries of the Family Dracul." These books focus on Dracula's blood kin. Serious read, not the typical "we have a vampire in our midst and must destroy him" garbage. Thanks. Rocksister

My fave vampire book - Fevre Dream by George Martin. Not really horror but some different ideas about the vamps.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. A fast book that is by most a really enjoyable single. Then when you get the chance, the rest of saga. Loved these books. I just finished ALL of them last week. Looking forward to the latest installment.

If I could force the entire world to read one book it would be "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield. It's a single volume historical fiction about the epic Spartan battle at Thermopylae. Nothing has moved me more, before or since. Try it. It's a quick read. If you don't like it I'll personally send you the cost of the book. Seriously.
If you are looking for Fantasy try "The Prince of Nothing" Series by Bakker. Excellent adult fantasy. Best Fantasy I've read since Song of Ice and Fire.
I checked out both books from the library, just I case I couldn't get into one or the other. Because I was in the mood for "straight up fantasy," I started the Bakker book first.
Initial thoughts: ok, I'm VERY hard on books. First sentence, I'm judging it. If I'm not pulled into the story in the first couple pages, I'm deducting points and generally in a foul mood. I hate obligatory prologues (just get on with the story!), and opening paragraphs with a dozen made-up names containing multiple omlouts (sp?).
But I can tell right away that I'm going to love this book. My god, this guy can
write. Even if his story is crap, I'm satisfied that he can create interesting characters, interesting sentences, and intriguing interpretations of magic. Plus, the guy's studying to get his Ph.D in philosophy. It definitely shows in the writing. My kind of fantasy! Thank you, Brinn. I'm only on page 20 (still in the dreaded prologue), but I'm enjoying this immensely.
