You've still got Korean English, Chinese English, South African English, etc. American and British are the most dominant, though I don't think they're anymore valid than the others. If we really want English comprehension to spread, we need a worldwide standard, rather than various camps saying in privileged tones, "I'm a native speaker." Looking at the etymology of the word "native," I wouldn't be so proud, heh.sgtnull wrote:i think most regional dialects are fading. and most everyone will speak in general american.

I'm from Southern Indiana, which is within fishing distance of Kentucky, but also within earshot of Ohio (considered to be the linguistic neutral zone of the US -- there are numerous broadcast journalism programs offered at Ohio colleges, because of the neutral accent there that is considered telegenic). My accent is all over the place, though, because I spent 6 months in south France in my college days, and have somewhat of a chameleon accent (I go native in 2-3 weeks).

This is pretty right for me. I live in NJ, so I'm sorta "general" but get some new england yankee english. I am a native Texan, but I only lived there two years before we moved up here.
Apparently I curse like a black man, but I'm not sure what exactly that entails. I don't tape record and play back curses or nothing.
EDIT-I only noticed after posting this thread was half dead. Sorry for necromancing it.

Hmm well as an Aussie married to an American (mid-Western) woman, I have no idea what my result means. It doesnt add up to 100% because I hadnt heard of some of the phrases in a few of the questions.
Gotta find me an Aussie slang quiz and see how you Yanks go!

I hunted down this test today after being told at work that I sound 'too Southern', despite the fact that I have lived in Northern California all my life.70% General American English
20% Yankee
5% Dixie
0% Midwestern
0% Upper Midwestern
Interestingly enough, I did not score as Southern as I did the first time I took the test. What changed?
I tend to pick up speech patterns from people I spend any amount of time with. I am also aware that I tend to be fairly informal.
Sooo... I am expected to change the way I talk overnight. This irks me.
Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing

I had to lie on some of the questions because the correct answer was not listed.
I'm surprised about the 0% Midwestern, though, because I live in southern Wisconsin, and before that lived in central Illinois.
