here's a clue to figuring out riddles in general: word associations are important in a LOT of riddles.
associative word combinations.

for this one, i'd say, what can you both "break" and "gain".

I want to say time...but I wont 'cos it's not right.

You can have time...but you can't hold it.
You can seem to gain time and I've definately lost time on many occasions.
You can have a great time.
But you can't break time...which is a bloody nuisance.
