And easily my favorite of the First Chrons. It's bleak as Hell, but it's a great read.
LM's Victory! The best of any of the TC chapters IMO.

To each their own, buddy. Coercri is a good 'in though...the redemption of the Giants is powerful indeed. Tull's Tale ranks right up there too for sheer horror.

Nothing beats the faith and majesty of Mhoram riding into singular battle with an enemy that should destroy him..simply because it was the only way to beat despair. I just got me the chills!

I have to disagree with the majority opinion here - first chronicles created a Land that I could care about. Yes, of course, TWL was painful for that reason, but I couldn't work up the same sense of caring for the messed-up inhabitants of the Land. 3 books of that agony was just too much. (OK, 2 not counting TOT) It was mainly the final showdown with Foul and the new Staff that enabled me to tolerate the Grim-ness of the second series in retrospect.

Totally agree on Lord Mhoram's victory and want to reiterate - get the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack and run "Rebels at Bay" (when the rebels are getting their butts kicked by the Imperial Walkers and Luke's heroic moment there) and see if the cues don't fit LMV closely. (Tie Luke's pulling himself up the cable with Mhoram's drawing the krill)
I've never agreed with those that think that pop or rock soundtracks can effectively illustrate (background) this kind of stuff...
Again, in White Gold Wielder the music from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - the opening of the Ark at the end - ties in fantastically with Covenant giving Foul the ring (there's even a cue for the clink of the ring on the dais), and the music from the first Star Trek movie (the meld of Vejur and Ilia) is awesome for the transformation of the new Staff of Law. If anyone tries it, let me know what you think? On target?

I now agree philosophically with PF's "We don't need no education" more than at any time in the past. It used to seem like a call to ignorance. Now it makes more sense.

Still, it makes a lousy soundtrack.

Rus, I'm curious, do you know of any places to get that music? I don't have any movie or TV tracks.

EDIT-I think I liked the second chrons more than the first, though TPTP was my favorite single book, and Mhoram's Victory is my favorite chapter.

Major music stores still carry the Star Wars soundtracks. You may be able to find CDs of the others at a big library. Or if you live in a civilized part of the world where order + delivery via the internet is easy, amazon.com always has that stuff. Just look for the movie soundtrack section. When comparing disks, the words "Original score" mean you will be getting the actual symphonic music heard in the movie. Avoid "Music inspired by..." at all costs!
Good luck!

TWL is indeed a fine book! As and introduction to a TC series it immediately has an unfair advantage over Runes; timewise, scope, intensity, shock...When I realize how really good it is, it's futile to hold up Runes for measurement. Runes needs to be viewed (holistically) in a completely different way... 8)
