That hint will likely not help anyone but Furls Fire, for it occurred during a conversation with her, in the Thomas Covenant Discussion forum, so here is another. In the two years, I have won two Watchies. No, three.
Also,
I make no claims of expertise,
as, perhaps, others of you folk do.
But I've made a start, and those who follow
might play a game of Sudoku.

Surely people should stop posting that they've guessed, and particularly when they were wrong. This just serves to narrow the options and make it easier to guess the Hatter.

Is the Mad Hatter supposed to reveal who they are once a correct guess was given?

CJ has a good point.
Menolly's point is likely up to each Hatter. Difficult to enforce such a rule, eh?

Difficult to enforce? Not at all! All will bow to me and do as I say, for I am the Mad Hatter!
Ah, I cannot do it. Such tyranny is not in my nature. I am after all a most gentle leader.

Yeah, the Hatter needs to say when he's been unmasked and the torch passed on... otherwise it gets confusing

Certainly the Hatter needs to say the Hat has been passed. But that's not the same as revealing who was beneath the Hat.
And Hatter, was being a gentle leader your first clue for us?

A very good question my dear friend, but I am not sure you are ready for such information.

It seems that I am all alone. Perhaps I should whistle for a friend.

I whistled and to my surprise a friend arrived. He is quite unwell however so I must nurse him back to health.

You will all be glad to know that my friend has made a full recovery. It's a good thing to, because the two of us now have a job to do.

My friend and I have completed our task and returned safe and sound. there were a few close calls, but my friend is swift and has a powerful kick, and so we have returned.

I don't think anyone is listening.
Well you all should be! The things I say to you won't come to you in dreams, and the things I show you can't be seen in the dancing flames.

Don't get so upset, MH, you know people are busy nowadays... you might need to crank things up a notch if you want to retain their attention!
