Believe me, it
is a big deal.
Our copies of OotP arrived today with large markings on both sides: "CARRIER: PLEASE DELIVER ON JUNE 21. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DELIVER BEFORE JUNE 21" And it was clearly marked "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
According to the Amazon website, the copy I ordered for Foamy was scheduled to arrive today. The copy I ordered for the rest of us was scheduled to arrive June 25.
Well, Foamy's copy of OotP arrived this morning, around 10am, by Fedex. She heard the truck pull up, and went to the front door and found the book on the doorstep. I got to look at it, then she started reading. I was feeling very left out.
At around 2pm, as we were eating lunch, the doorbell rang. I raced to the door, and there was a UPS delivery lady, holding our second copy of OotP. I screamed and started jumping up and down. The delivery lady smiled indulgently, and my family had a good laugh at me. (My husband said they are probably used to the kids reacting that way, not the mommies.

)
I've been reading ever since...

I thought I would be clever and I had a copy ordered at my favourite bookshop. I went down there yesterday to pick it up and THEY HAD SOLD OUT!!!!!!!
I politely pointed out that I had gone to all the trouble of filling out an order form and everything, but all I got was a poor attempt at an apologetic look and some feeble excuse about how it was first come, first served.
But that was why I went through all the rigmarole of ordering one, so the I would be assured of getting one!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say, once I do get my copy, I will be taking my custom elsewhere.

Ah, Infelice, that's terrible!
I stood in line like a dork at midnight on friday night to get my copy. Barnes and Noble had a system set up like so: When you walked in, you got either a red ticket (if you had pre-ordered) or a yellow ticket (if you had not.) They then called out the red ticket numbers in groups of 25. My red ticket was apparantly near the very end of the red ticket list. (I didn't get there until almost 1:00, I had a show that night.) So, my number was due to be in the next group, but instead they called for all remaining red tickets to come to the registers, and then immediately asked yellow ticket holders to start lining up!

You should have seen some of the venomous looks I got from people I had to push past to get to my beloved pre-ordered copy! It was a little scary.

I'm sorry your bookstore didn't save you a reserved copy

, but they may very well have been threatened with looting/violence! If looks could kill I'd have been a smoldering grease spot.

You would be a the lucky smouldering grease spot though B&B.
They say patience is a virtue. I wonder how virtuous I will have to be? *sniff*

My Grams is using that book to blackmail me into cleaning my basement.

Ah, well. Maybe the mice will go away if I clean.

Because it's a selling point. Why else was there not even the tiniest detail allowed to be given away before the release, apart from that someone dies?
As for who it was - that was up to JK.

I won't spoil the book for you by telling, Infelice.
BTW, why don't you check out Target? My sister picked up a very cheap (relatively speaking) copy there for her son.
